new VPS creating issues with edgebander

I just purchased a newer model 1255 Holz-her vertical panel saw and am having issues with the quality of cuts, when it comes to edgebanding. I have a larger Bimatic Silence plus bander with almost all the bells and whistles except for pre-mill. My issue is that sometimes I am not getting true perpendicular cuts as I would on my old unisaw. I'm not sure if it is flex of the panel itself when cutting not directly over a grid but for the most part pieces are cut tight to grid and saw is calibrated correctly to yield 90deg cuts.

So the issue is edgebander glue applicator and pressure rollers are not engaging the full face of the panel, and therefore half of the width of edgebanding is not glued.

There appears to be two solutions or paths - adjust edgebander to band out of square cuts (three pressure wheels so maybe one can tilt up and one down and one 90 for), add extra glue with applicator wheel. Another option, add rubber facings to pressure wheels to still apply pressure if not 100% square cut. Secondly, fix the VPS to cut squarely - I am not 100% certain which conditions replicate the out of square cuts so maybe further testing and calibration needed? Most of the pieces cut appear to be close to square and band fine. Never had a problem like this with table saw!

Thanks, Nathan

How fresh is the blade in the panel saw? I'd switch blades before trying anything else.

It is actually a new blade (although now dull blade). A different type I am trying with negative hook angle Hi-ATB (same style as I used on table saw but with different bore for VPS). I am wondering if I should go with one of the recommended blades which would pull the panel instead of push it away from saw. What would you recommend for blade? I notice it throws a lot of smoke/burns panel. I am getting chipping now on back side of panel (against grid) - which I think should normally be clean side.

After experimenting with a number of blades recommended by tooling suppliers, I found the best results using the blade recommended by the saw distributor. A VPS is different from a table saw.

The smoking leads me to suspect the blade is mounted backwards or the motor is reverse wired. I would check that.

Is the out of square more noticeable on horizontal cuts or vertical cuts? That would narrow the issue down. Pure physics makes it more likely on horizontal cuts.

Here is a link for a Striebig VPS that may give you some ideas to address this issue.

Try finding a hollow ground blade from Leitz tooling. We have a ton of these for out Holzher 1265 and the cuts couldnt be better.

Thanks for the link Rich! So turns out saw wasn't calibrated well at all. After adjusting heal in both directions I discovered blade wasn't perpendicular to table in either vertical or horizontal directions! I have spent a good part of the day adjusting the carriage bearings and now it is cutting squarely for the most part. Not sure about the blades, was hoping for an ATB maybe with low positive angle rake.

You are welcome Nathan! You will probably continue to tweak the adjustments to dial it in. You may also find your operator motions will have some effect too, depending on your bearing tolerances.

Good luck on finding a blade you are happy with. If you are scoring with a climb cut, that creates a different parameter than a table saw blade. I was able to get 30 sheets or so of chip free cutting of melamine. Minimizing rip cuts will lengthen time between blade changes.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
