Shiplapped cabinet back8/3
I am having trouble deciding how to fix my shiplapped boards to the back of my cabinet.
The cabinet is made from solid rimu timber. The thickness of the shiplapped boards are 15mm at a width of 100mm. The height of the cabinet is 1000mm.
I did not want to glue the boards as I wanted to allow for expansion and shrinkage. As you could imagine there is flex in the middle of the shiplapped boards if I only screw the top and bottom of each board.
Any ideas would greatly help?
We typically use 12mm plywood backs on large cabinets. 1000mm is not that tall.
You've got a pine like piece of wood 15mm x 100mm. In that one piece there will be little movement in width. You should be fine to fix each piece with 2 screws or nails top and bottom. The shiplap will allow each piece to move independently.
We've done numerous book cases or hutches with shiplapped or t & g backs.
On backs that are tall and/or thin, we will add a batten or two horizontally across the outside of the back. Glued to each board, it ties them all together and makes it more rigid. Or rigid enough.
Another option is to put a stretcher across the back, half way up, with a dado on the top and bottom edges to capture a rabbet on the ends of the ship lapped back boards, which will now be less than half as long and have almost no flex. If you have a shelf in the cabinet, cut a dado on the inside face of the stretcher to capture the back edge of the shelf, making it much stiffer, too.
T & G is a better choice as far as stiffness goes. Each piece is connected as far as stiffness; however, they are not connected in regards to movement. Where as shiplap the pieces are truly individual in terms of stiffness & movement.
