Hello guys,
I have an older 5 hp Powermatic shaper with a 1 inch spindle, can I swap it out for a 3/4 inch spindle? I have many more cutters in the 3/4 size I would like to use.

I think you can.
If I were going to attempt this I would call Marsh Powertools and ask for Brady, 800-433-TOOL (8665). He could advise you if it is possible and sell you the spindle if it is available.
Most people would not want to do that by the way. They would want a larger spindle, 1-1/4" is more of a standard.
Good luck!

It may cost more than it's worth. No idea why they made a 1" spindle, not a common cutter bore. Those old PM26 shapers had a really flimsy quill setup.

I’ve worked on a couple 26’s in my day. The 1”, 3/4”, 1/2”,and router collet are interchangeable in the same bearing cartridge/housing. There is a draw bar with a tapered nut on the bottom of the cartridge. All you need is the spindle, and they are relatively easy to change out.
