bit selection for prefinished ply
1/23/23
we cut mostly 3/4 melamine, and use a 1/2" 2 flute compression. We do the odd prefinished plywood job and use the same bit, but the edge quality could be better. Do any of you use plywood compression bits, and are they noticeably better?
Thanks

The trouble with ply is the alternating direction of plys.
We use compression chipbreakers on ply and if the finish needs to be better we cut slightly oversize and take the last 0.020 with a new compression spiral.

Chris,
What feed rate and RPM are you running?
Have you tried any compression bits with a
chipbreaker added?

We cut LOTS of plywood with a Vortex compression bit, no chip breaker. You may want to use a bit exclusively for plywood. PC dulls the bit in an odd way. I might be off on this but it is worth a try.

Chuck- we run 18,000rpm 20m/min. Haven’t tried a chip breaker compression before but sounds like that might be a good idea.

Chris,
We have good luck with CB on plywood. Let me know if I can help.
