What are you using to spray water based paints and finishes?

I've been struggling with water based products for about 3 years now and am beginning to loose hope for these products. I've switched brands of finishes many times and I've tried a couple different spray systems, but I'm rarely able to get a nice finish without a large amount of hassle. So I'm wondering what everyone else is having success with? I've tried a cheap HVLP gun and I'm currently using a Kremlin 10.14 pump with a Kremlin MVX gun. I've heard Kremlin makes a pump thats designed more for water based finishes, I believe it was the EOS 15-C25, has anyone tried it? OR how about the CAT Technoligies H2O setup? I'm just very discouraged with the Kremlin system because parts are so expensive, hard to get and you can't find much information on them.

I switched from using a 10:1 AAA set-up to using a pot and gun for spraying WB clears (WB pigmented lacquer too) and haven't looked backed.
With about half of my work spec-ed WB I decided to embrace the pot/gun after trying one out on a small job and getting great results instead of the often frustrating and less then satisfactory results I had with the pump.
Yes, a pot/gun can be a bit more work, use a lot more air and be a bit slower when compared to a pump (I use Sata 1000K guns with a 1.3 for clears and they are almost as fast as a AAA with a 411). but I've found the mostly drama free results to be worth it.

With the Kremlin have you changed over to their 'waterborne' series of tips ending in the numbert 2?
They have worked for me to spray alot of Zenith Valspar clear and ICA clears.

If it's a small project, I use a gravity spray gun from CAT/Jaguar. Very happy. 1.4 or 1.5 orifice

Use the following chart from Kremlin to choose the best tip size for your project

Nick: do you get a lot more overspray using a pressure pot system compared to a AAA, I think the only thing I've ever sprayed with one is contact adhesive.

RobertJ: I was aware that some tips were designed more for atomizing water based, but I didn't know they end in a 2. I've been using a 09-094+, but I do have a 09-112, I'll give that a try and see how it works.

You can get great results using any of the equipment you listed. I have been spraying WB for sneaking up on 2 decades and have tried myriads of different finishes and different sprayers. Once you understand the properties of WB you can use about anything. In my arsenal you will find everything from cheap Harbor freight cup guns topped with PPS cups to a turbine, airless and a few AAA units.

If I had to pick one sprayer for high volume clears, I really like the Graco Merkur AAA setup. Very quiet. Fantastic spray pattern and parts are only slightly astronomically priced.

For ease of changeover and anything less than high volume I would get a quality turbine unit and put an accuspray 10GP gun on it and add PPS. This is actually the gun that I can get the highest quality finish off but it is not as fast as the AAA.With WB I think you will find the accuspray to be the best best to a quality finish.

Denny, have you also used the apollo and fuji top quality guns? But still prefer the accuspray?

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.

  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.
  • Responses that initiate or support inappropriate and off-topic discussion of general politics detract from the professional woodworking focus of WOODWEB, and will be removed.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
