New spray system

I'm looking for a new spray system. I currently have a 3 stage hvlp earlax mv7000. Needs to be replaced. I have a small dying pancake air compressor. I spray in a booth in my shop. So far i have been spraying SW sealer, conversion varnish and pre cat. Not looking to spend a ton but want something that will last. Any suggestions? Most projects have been smaller so far. Bedroom sets, kitchen cabinets, tables and benches. I am about 2 years into the start of my business and averaging around 7-8 gal a month. I am a one man shop. What are your thoughts???

I currently am using an aaa system but I also have an Accuspray hvlp gun with the 3M cup system with disposable liners that runs off a turbine. My turbine finally died and I haven't replaced it but was thinking about a new Accuspray turbine (3M owns them now I think). It's great for quick changes, easy cleanup and sprays great, just not as fast as the aaa.

i've sprayed cat, kremlin, and graco aaa systems (and have extras systems for sale) and like many others before - wish i had ponied up for an aaa sooner. i struggled with a cup gun (iwata) for a couple of years before a large project demanded an aaa rig. we still have a cup gun for spray stains and little stuff but we really only use the aaa for top coated product that goes out the door.

in my experience -

cat - fine pump and gun. the bobcat gun is easy to handle and parts and tips are easy to get from our local supplier.

kremlin - i have a 15:1 eos system that we shoot with daily. i'm not 100% sure if i think it is better than cat or graco, but i want to because i put down extra dollars for this system. i do like the excite gun over the bobcat or graco's g15.

graco - i have an older 20:1 pump i purchased at auction and had rebuilt. i think it is the best pump but the g15 is uncomfortable for me to hold. this pump is the quietest of the three. we don't use this set up much as it is dedicated to pigmented finishes.

we spray only two-parts finishes and use the kremlin hopper (best) and cat hopper (cheap) on our graco system. this allows us to spray small amounts without wasting too much finish.

With that volume you could get by with a turbine or a pressure pot. Do you have a decent sized compressor? If so a pot is a good stepping stone.

As far as a turbine, I have a Capspray turbine and an Accuspray model 10 GP gun set up with PPS.It is an outstanding gun and sprays as well as any AAA in fact I prefer it's spray pattern over the AAA sprayers that I have.

I also have a CAT AAA with the bobcat gun and a Graco Merkur AAA.

I had to scale back my custom cabinet shop due to a knee problem so now I am not spraying the volume that I used to and pretty much exclusively use the turbine/Accuspray gun.

If you are interested in an AAA, let me know as I am really no longer using the CAT unit and would sell it for a reasonable price.

I have had many people recommend the accuspray gun. The model you use. Is that the first choice for spray quality, or just what you purchased? Do all the "10 guns" spray the same quality? I would like to try one, just don't want to have buyers remorse...!
Thanks Jim

I bought it for on site work to revive a Cabspray turbine that I had sitting around because I didn't like dragging my AAA to job sites when I was spraying kitchens doing cabinet restorations.

The gun was not cheap but I can say it surpassed my expectations for spray quality and for smaller volume jobs I actually prefer it to the AAA units that I have.

Mine is the 10 GP that is pressurized and I use 3m PPS liners in it for fast clean up and change overs.

Thanks for the great info. I have purchased a 3M pressureized PPS systeam to be added to a syphon feed on my pressure pot gun. Faster, less or no reducer. The problem was it leaked! Eradic drips on my project. .....(finishing death) so I called 3M and spoke to with a tech. After "much" discussion and eliminateing the poor cleaning as a possible explanation. He admitted they leaked. I believe the pressure from your gun is so small that it is not a problem. Compared with the miniatureized pressure pot system(gauge with adjustable pressure) .

Thanks again, Jim

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
