MLC's Agualente vs. Agualente Plus

I have been using ML Campbell's Agualente for a few years. I like the Clear Satin. I am not fond of the Pigmented version. (I use the solvent-borne products instead for paint-grade projects.) In the past I had to redo a couple of projects because the mineral streaks came through the two coats of Agualente White Stain Blocking Primer. I also had solvent-pop issues with the pigmented topcoat if the wet application was just a little bit too thick.

Because of a recent post in this forum, I learned about Agualente Plus. After reaching out to my distributor, I received Product Information sheets for the 4 Agualente Plus products: clear sealer, clear topcoat, white primer, and white topcoat. Looking through the specifications, most everything is about the same. The only difference that I found was that "Sanding Dry" times were longer with the Plus vs. the original. From the dates on the PI sheet files, it appears that this product line has only been out for a couple of months.

I would like to switch back from solvent-based pigmented to water-borne pigmented, but would like to know about anyone's real experiences. I really do not want/need to redo any more projects because of finish weaknesses.

That being said, does anyone have any first hand experience with these new products?

I'm about to get some experience with the Plus. I ordered some pigmented Agualente from my supplier and was surprised to receive the Plus product. Looks like my supplier is selling only the Plus version. I wonder if it's replacing the old version. MLC's website has no mention of the Plus product anywhere. One guy posted on Woodweb complaining about the stack time. Here's to hoping it's no worse than the old stuff!

I too was recently surprised about the plus.

I needed one gallon of clear satin to finish up an old project for my home. I had been putting it off for some time since I have been far too busy with paying cabinet jobs.

I found that even though I had to order the gallon, it had a use by date of April 29th, 2016. I also found the viscosity was 32 in a #4 ford cup right out of the can. No thinning.

Perhaps this was because the top was shined over pretty bad and would not redissolve when stirred. I had to strain it twice to get all the clumps out.

I contacted the Regional Product Manager for ML Campbell. I have gotten to know him pretty well over the years and have found he is very good at his job and I trust him. He assured me that the issues I pointed out were expected but not to be concerned about. He said the product would perform well. He said the skinning was something they were working on and the low viscosity was correct. According to him, the changes were made because there was a big demand by the users for this. He could not explain the use by date, but assured me the product has a 1 year shelf life.

I sprayed several coats with my CAT AAA pump and was very pleased. It did perform well. I use the surfprep for scuffing between coats, and was very pleased how it sanded.

I have been using mostly ValSpar Zenith Products in the shop for the last two years. The Agualente Plus performed every bit as good as the Zenith.

Just finished spraying 24' of base cabinets with the Plus product in an off-white tint. I've sprayed many gallons of the original Agualente and was mostly pleased with it.

Smells pretty much the same, so I'm guessing no major reformulation. Seemed to spray a little better straight out of the can with an 09 tip on my AAA. Layed out nicely and seemed a bit less prone to runs. Looks great when dry. May be my imagination, but the satin sheen looks a bit flatter than the old stuff (which I always felt was closer to a semi-gloss).

Still interested in hearing from MLC regarding what changes were made...

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
