Ageing fir

I have a 40+ year old fir ceiling that I have to match several replaced boards on. I think it was originally sandblasted and had a white/grey ish toner applied. all of the color soaked into the soft grain and mostly disappeared, while the hard left the color showing on top. Is there a way to get that old patina fir color with out staining? If I dye stain to get the back ground color, then tone, it is not even close. any ideas?

I've used amber or garnet shellac to "yellow" new finish as a wash coat. No complaints, but I've never had any long term feedback on how the color did over time.

Varthane aka Rustoleum makes a stain called Summer Oak. I have found that it matched the aged patina on oak, maple and birch. I'd be willing to bet it would work on fir too. I know you mentioned without a stain, but I think this will do it. I included a link, but it might not fully show the color.

Can you post a picture? Aged fir is tough to match as the summer grain (harder grain) darkens with age and staining new boards does the opposite, penetrating and darkening the softer spring grain.
I've been at this for 40 years and I stained quite a few fir ceilings back in the 70's, at that time in my neck of the woods (San Francisco bay area) it was not uncommon to stain them with one coat of Olympic or Cabots exterior semi-transparent stain, often times fogged on with a airless sprayer then left to penetrate with no wiping which would give you the look that you describe .
We did this thinking " hey, if one coat is good for outside, it should be great for inside" oblivious that these products have mildew-cides and fungicides in them and not meant for interior application.

I think the best picture I would have would be of a maple floor. We just did one like this and I can ask one of my guys if he took any pictures. This customer for whatever reason specifically wanted the maple floor to look just like it did before we sanded it. I would describe this as 15 year old maple that had oil based poly on it and that had yellowed. This ended up working perfect. We have also used the Varthane Summer Oak on several jobs where we added new wood floors to an an area while not refinishing the existing (maple, oak, & birch jobs), and on each of them this color was able to tie the new together with the naturally finished existing. We don't deal with a ton of douglas fir as I do wood floors and it's just not all that common here (although I really like it), so maybe I'm not quite picturing it "aged". I'll ask my guy if he happened to take any pictures of that last floor and I have some samples to make for a couple customers today so I'll try to remember to throw a little of this stain on a couple fir boards and post up a picture for you to see if it might do the trick.

One other stain we've had quite a bit of success with matching with is General Finishes, they have a huge list of color blends (100+ options). Not sure how it might act on the spring grain, but another possible thought. I included a link to many of their blends below too incase it might help.

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
