Anyone else with MLC's Resistant problems???

Ok this issue has been a thorn in my side for a couple months now. I sprayed 5 gallons of Resistant in a white tinted color on a recent project. Everything was going well until gallon number 5, then I started getting a really crap finish....lots of pinholes and a "dirty" looking finish. I broke everything from the pump to the gun tip down for a thorough cleaning. I also cleaned the entire booth from top to bottom. I raised the heat in the shop, I added more thinner, played with air pressures and anything else I could think of and nothing solved it. I called the rep and he said they had no other problems with this particular batch, but to try using a little retarder. I decided to just pick up a new gallon of finish anyway and that did the trick.

Next job was Resistant in a green tint, no issues whatsoever.

Needed to build a couple additional pieces for the previous job so ordered another new gallon in the same white.....and having the same problems! Literally sprayed the green and white in the same day and had great finish from one and crap from the other! What gives???? I know now that it's not contamination in my equipment or shop temperatures, it's got to be the finish. But this new can is a totally different batch, (I compared the numbers), and is giving the same problems.

My supplier is generally pretty good about helping me out, but not much help here. And realistically I'm small time spraying maybe 3 dozen gallons a year, so I don't expect a whole lot either. Just venting and wondering if anyone else out there has had similar issues?

Was it off the shelf white or a custom tint?
Sometimes the mix monkeys will make a mistake on one pail of a custom order and add something they shouldn't have....it happens. Maybe they catch the mistake, maybe they don't.

In any event, it doesn't necessarily mean the problem is with the product itself as in a "bad batch" from the factory, but could indicate a bad pail from the tinters.

Nobody uses Stealth around here so the local doesn't stock it. That means having to order it in every time and just not worth the hassle.

The color was a tinted white, which is why I'm thinking it could very well be the mix guys. Not sure what the heck they could do to it to cause the issues. But whatever it was they did it twice! Still figured it was worth checking to see if anyone else had the problems as I don't know if they would tell me if there was a bad batch or just try to pass it off on the customers.

thanks,
jeff

We have had a problem with white off the shelf and clear base tinted a reddish pink . We ordered new of the pink and I strained the remaining with a super fine strainer and the grit in the strainer was unbelievable. I think I still have the strainer to show my rep I will post a picture later. As for the white we opened a new gallon and was fine . Our shop conditions are not perfect but they're good enough to produce a really good finish so I know it's not environmental . What's the benefits of Stealth ?

Stealth is a new resin package. It was designed to confront the shear problem found when using the Kremlin AAA pump. I could never really get Resistant to work. I can get Stealth to work almost flawlessly every time. Only time I have problems is first shoot out of the AAA after switching over from clear to pigmented. The first one or two pcs can sometimes be slightly rough instead of the normal glass smooth I get. After the first spray it's generally good spraying the rest of the job.

I've come up with a thinning formula that seems to work very well for me with Stealth.

Stealth was created to keep whites from yellowing ..... That company should be up to date on stocking products for you ! Who cares who is or isn't using Stealth in your area.
Bail on Resistant , have them tint your colors in Krystal . You won't believe it ! Sprays just like and lays out like Krystal does .Very little to no reduction necessary .. Maybe just some flow 2... We do it all the time for our darker colors . And yes Krystal can be tinted don't let em tell you different , my Ml Campbell supplier does it for us .

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.

  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.
  • Responses that initiate or support inappropriate and off-topic discussion of general politics detract from the professional woodworking focus of WOODWEB, and will be removed.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
