Asturo Eco/SSP Spray Gun Problems

10/7/16
DanShaf Member

Many years ago I bought an Asturo Eco/SSP spray gun. This was when they first introduced this low CFM gun. I have lost my spray gun wrench for this gun. It was a manufacturer-specific pin spanner wrench.

The fluid nozzle and air cap are one single unit. My air cap ring is "stuck" to the baffle and I can't get my gun to batten down so that everything is air tight. I've tried soaking the air cap and baffle in acetone, that hasn't given me any success.

Might I borrow anyone's Asturo gun wrench? I hate to ask...

I have been a contributing participant on this forum since the forum began.

I have an eco ssp and wrenchBut Im in ventura Ca. Walcom also makes the same spanner wrench. Homestead finishing might be able to hook you up much cheaper than the asturo distributor. You could also try a set of adjustable snap ring pliers. Just a thought.

P.S. How do you like the co ssp? I originally bought it be cause I was doing a lot of on site work with a small compressor, But Ive been thinking of upgrading/trying something "better because I mostly run off of shop air now.

Snap ring pliers might do the trick, thanks!

Regarding Asturo, in theory this was supposed to be an amazing gun, with amazing machining, and amazing air flow technology. Who knows what it isa now --AOM America-- if it's the same Asturo that was made years ago or something Asian, who knows? And what of the quality of the gun made these days.

The gun had so much promise and I took it out to give it another try. I wanted to do either a pressure feed set up or an Asturo K24 dual diaphram pump.

The compressor that I'm accessing has enough CFM to feed a Stuhr dual pad rubbing machine, but it seems to me that I am starving my gun for air volume. And that's why I wanted to give that low CFM Asturo gun another chance to do something good.

I'm optimistic that the Asturo can do something. It has been so long since I used uit, but I seem to recall that it was a very slow gun, meaning for piano lids and conference tables it will be more trouble than it's worth.

I do hope that the snap ring pliers will be a good first step in the rehibilitation of this Asturo gun.

I use my eco ssp(2 gal pot) all the time for clears, and yes it does a good job but it is slow. I bought mine about 7-8 years ago, made in Italy. I tried the dual diaphragm pump but I found its operation kind of crude so I returned it immediately. They wanted to sell me another few hundred dollars worth of parts to make its operation more smooth... Now that I have a little more air at my disposal Im curious if there is anything out there that I might like better that has a little more speed and atomization to it that isnt a total air hog.

Besides air-assisted airless?

CA Technologies have a great assortment of guns, including low CFM guns.

I got the Asturo K24 dual diaphram pump for $50, I couldn't turn that down.

I'm about to try out a Binks Mach 1 BBR. They don't make that anymore. Some of their air caps need more than 22 CFM, but some will only eat 13 CFM, so it depends on the set up of the Mach 1. I have a 92 air cap, but only a 1.2mm fluid set. That's super thin, maybe less than 15 seconds in a Ford #4 cup.

Thanks Dan. I have been wanting to try a C.A.T gun for a while. Have you used any of them? Any recommendations? And I would love to upgrade to AAA if I ever come across the extra 2 grand :/

I have used their low CFM gravity guns and attached cup guns, I don't know the models. They aren't slow, they are great production-friendly guns and the quality of atomization is superb. Demo them if your distributor allows. You'll be impressed.

The adjustable snap ring pliers didn't work. The pins fit in the air holes of the baffle but the whole wrench is too small to work as a pin spanner wrench. My next try will be to grind down the tips of some needlenose pliers to see if that will work to unscrew the air cap ring from the threaded baffle.

Yes, Dan Shaf, I recognize you from this and other sites. I have a wrench for the Eco S (not SSP), but I think it would probably work for you.

I could send it to you, but would like it back. If interested email is tmgrp@optonline.net

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
