Large conference table9/27
We are being asked to build a wood conference table, boat shaped design, in an extreme size. They want this table to be 60" at the ends bowing out to 72" in the center and 24 feet long in the length direction. I am looking for some suggestions for support and also for pattern as this will be a veneered table with a 3" hardwood border edge. We will divide this up into 3 - 96" long segments in order to be able to move it. Any suggestions.
You are looking at an extreme project that is fraught with both design and execution hazards. Simple stuff will bite you in a second, stuff like just reaching to the center for spraying and buffing that big of a slab is an issue. Laying up the veneer, how to lock the slabs together, etc. The list will be quite long, and I doubt you will anticipate all of those in the bid. I did one big conference table in my career, and it was only 48"x144". I ordered the top already laid up. Little things like just moving the slab around the shop required getting an extra guy or two to help. That meant they had to stop working on their projects. I never thought of that in the bid as an example. With my experiences on that one table, I never bid another one.
Did a 21 ft long boat shape table76" across middle 56" across end talk to others who have done them Don't be afraid of the unknown it can be done you can make some serious money here good luck
We ended up using North Creek Woodworks out of Rochester, New York as this top was larger than we had ability to press. They did an excellent job and shipped top to us crated, stained and finished and ready to assemble in 4 3' x 12' sections. They worked with us to get the proper veneer and did a beautiful job matching the pattern we needed. they routed in the titejoint fasteners and splined the joint so it was a breeze to assemble. We had it up and assembeld ready for use in less than 2 hours. Customer was extrememly happy and we will use these guys again when the need arises. Table was 24' long x 6' wide and was perfect! These guys are professionals.
Thanks, but the guys at Northcreek Woodworks did a perfect job and the table came out beautiful with a very happy customer!
Thanks for the kind words Dan. I'll post this for my crew tomorrow. It was a fun table to build.
