Library Bookcase with Swing Out Cabinet

5/31/17
Richard

Hello All,

I am working on designing a library bookcase and one of the cabinet sections needs to swing out into the room in order to access an electrical panel.

Just struggling with figuring out what sort of hinging system and how to best conceal it.

I have attached some rough drawings, the details are not complete yet as I want to nail down this hinge detail first.

Some other things to note are that 2 of the walls are straw bale and as such have no framing in them in order to fasten cabinets to. Only plaster and straw.

I would appreciate any ideas on how to best go about this.

Regards

Richard

First, will this be legal? I thought you had to be able to walk up to an electrical panel.

If it is legal, check on Rixsom hardware. They make pivot hinges. I have used them a few times, expensive, but very good. I once made a secret door which was a bookcase and worked great.

Whatever you do make sure that the hardware will carry the weight of a bookcase with books! It can be very heavy!

I did this one with Rixson hardware to hide the powder room (everyone called it the secret shitter😊). I had to build a stought bulkhead over the door and reinforce the floor to carry the load. The door is 45" wide, three years old, and still works good. I used the extended top pin(I believe it's the earthquake model) to help make the mechanics work better with removal and installation of the door. Hope this helps

Rixsom pivot hinges are really high quality.

It took me a little time to understand how the upper pivot works and depending on your weight, you will need to reinforce the header and probably the floor.

I used my CNC to do my routing and I made a mock up in the shop. Neat stuff, but again, check on covering up an electrical panel.

Look at Gary Katz's website. He has good info and a video with usable solutions.

Off topic, but most Code regulations will not allow you to cover up an electrical panel.

Thanks for all the feedback.

Firstly having read up on code in my area I think I am OK to conceal the electrical panel so long as it's accessible and I am not putting it inside a closet where other items are being stored.

I had been leaning towards a pivot hinge but I have been asked to have the counter come proud of the columns by 3"-4". I think in this case I would not be able to use a pivot hinge if I wanted to swing out both upper and lower sections. Is that correct?

I had thought about just having the top section swing out but I am concerned about how to conceal the bottom a pivot if it was not in the base. Also concerned about how much I may have to reinforce lower cabinet given the size and weight of my cabinet.

Does anyone thing that a SOSS hinge secured to the column might work to enable me to just swing out the upper section?

Regards

Richard

I'd check with the local code people and get it in writing! It wouldn't fly here.

I'm with Larry. If it's not written for your specific case, it's not real...

Soss would be the last choice.

Compare them to Tectus or even Sagutsune concealed hinges and they are like a Model T.

The Tectus have 3 way adjustment and weight limits that are realistic. Very nice to work with, and will not sag with 60 day's use like Soss.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
