9" stain grade baseboard installation

I've been asked to quote the installation of 9" x 3/4" stain grade select alder base throughout a 12,000 + sq ft home.
The height of the 1 piece molding combined with it being prefinished, stain grade and exasperated by going in post flooring (scribing to wood and stone flooring) has me scratching my head a bit with a time / $ factor for installation.
Part of me is thinking that if they want me to do it they'll have to pony up for a simple hourly rate. I can't control the quality of everyone from the framers to flooring crews ahead of me..
Any words of wisdom or divine revelations?

Not all sales are a good sale. The think that also stands out to me is Alder. It dents if you look at it sideways. Every time you drive a nail you have an opportunity to dent it. Prefinished?

Figurer what you think it will take and double it. Twice if it doesn't seem like enough. Then go look for an easier job.

Listen to the part of you that says hourly- your post strikes me as coming from some one who won't kill the clock.
Other than that, tell them you'll have to see everything done before you can give them a solid price- and if it gets to that (doubt it will, sorry) check every where with a straight edge and a string so you know what your up against.
I hate wide one piece base- if it has any kind of profile on one edge it often doesn't cope straight because the stuff usually cups. They say it sames time, but usually not for the trim guy.
I've actually told contractors I would give a better price if I could rip the profile off and re-apply it separately. A couple have let me.

I would not walk away from a 12,000 sq ft house. Do you think these people are looking for a budget job? Talk with the contractor and be sure you know what they are looking for. There will be an Architect for sure. I am going to take a wild guess and say these people have money and it is not their first home.

Like the comment above, estimate what it would take you do to it, double that number and add a healthy profit.

If you get the job, it may lead to more work in the house and these are the jobs where you will make some good money. I would not do a job like this as time and materials. You can make a lot more bidding it.

Also, if you get it, put only a couple of guys on the job, your very best at the skill level and also customer relations.

If the owner, architect and builder gain confidence in your ability, they will give you work throughout the house. Money is not the issue here and there is no reason anyone should loose money on a 12,000 sq ft home.

The builder is charging 20%. The Architect is charging 5-10%. The Designer is charging less than 5%.

Those guys want you to charge as much as possible. The customer wants it done asap. They don't really care if it costs another $50k. The builder would be more concerned about the quality and the guys getting it done in a reasonable amount of time. I would guarantee to have all of my guys work overtime(50hrs/week) at whatever rate you feel comfortable. If he balks go double on a liberal estimate.

I agree with Paul bid this job and don't do t&m. Figure every piece you will have to scribe and make sure you add a good profit. Hopefully the GC hasen't blown the budget yet .

Ballpark price would be 3.50 - 5.00 per lf depending on how cut up the house is and how profiled the base is.

Cheers

Alder is a terrible choice for base! 9" wide, one piece will have all sorts of issues. I hope the back-out cut is enough to offset the non-flat nature of it. Finding that much 9" was probably a struggle for the mill shop. If they glued for width maybe it will be a little more stable. Copes will be a struggle. If you price it three times as high as you think it should be, you shouldn't loose a lot of $.

FORUM GUIDELINES: Please review the guidelines below before posting at WOODWEB's Interactive Message Boards (return to top)

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.
  • Messages that accuse businesses or individuals of alleged negative actions or behavior are inappropriate since WOODWEB is unable to verify or substantiate the claims.
  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.
  • Responses that initiate or support inappropriate and off-topic discussion of general politics detract from the professional woodworking focus of WOODWEB, and will be removed.
  • Participants are encouraged to use their real name when posting. Intentionally using another persons name is prohibited, and posts of this nature will be removed at WOODWEB's discretion.
  • Comments, questions, or criticisms regarding Forum policies should be directed to WOODWEB's Systems Administrator

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).

The staff of WOODWEB assume no responsibility for the accuracy, content, or outcome of any posting transmitted at WOODWEB's Message Boards. Participants should undertake the use of machinery, materials and methods discussed at WOODWEB's Message Boards after considerate evaluation, and at their own risk.
