After 16 years in business on family property we have the opportunity to relocate to a facility that has closed down that primarily worked with old reclaimed barn timbers. The company routinely fumigated with controlled substance to rid the beams of powder post beetles (one of the guys on staff had a license to use the chemicals), however there is the reality that after they have been there for 20 years there has never been a lack of suspect infestation.
My question is, if I do make this acquisition and we more or less cleanse the facility of the contaminated wood, what are the thoughts on whether the PPB's are still on staff waiting to infest our furniture grade wood with a vengeance? This would be an absolute disaster as we have a reputation for high grade wood and have $$$$$$ of slab and lumber inventory that is kiln dried and heat treated, and it would be a complete deal breaker if we started having outbreaks in our slabs. I don't really know where they show up from anyhow, so maybe someone out there actually has put GPS trackers on these critters and actually know if they live in the dirt or what during dormancy or whatever. I'm being extreme to potentially spark any thoughts here. I don't want to make the largest acquisition of my carreer to realize it has been the greatest mistake as well.
Appreciate your thoughts.
