Delta 3 hp shaper

I need to change the bearings on a 3 hp Delta shaper. Before I start I thought I would check to see if anyone reading these forum posts had done this task before and if they had any advice for how I can do it? Do I need to buy the bearings from Delta or can I get them from McMasters or MSC? Any thoughts would be helpful. Thank you.

Delta has not been able to ship parts for over year now - due to a sale and confusion and loss of desire to do business or some such nonsense.

Fortunately, bearings are easily available form a number of sources. Use the existing bearing to get the numbers. I like using Bearings Inc, a local outlet, since they can advise me on stepping up a grade or two, or improving life or performance.

Below is a link to a small shop that makes and supplies the parts for the older Delta shapers (43- 363) that have spindle cartridges with interchangeable spindles.

Prices certainly are more than reasonable. Too bad he doesn't offer Powermatic.

Hi David, thank you for the lead. I'll start taking the shaper apart this week and contact Bearings Inc. for the new parts. This was a big help.

FWIW I believe the Delta cartridge bearings are pre-loaded, so a little more involved to change them than some more basic situations. If it's an older machine you may want to check out OWWM as they have several threads on changing the bearings on Delta shapers.

good luck,

Yep, what JeffD said.
OWWM, and if you can get a response from Robert Vaughan, you will have it made.

The problem is that it is only 14 years old. the OWWM website says they only discuss machines more than 20 years old. It gets worse, it is a Platnium Edition. I'm not sure just what the difference is between these and the standard edition but it seem to be more complicated then just changing the bearings like I would on a unisaw or 8" jointer.

My suggestion is not going to work for that newer type of shaper. And as JeffD said, those older shapers have the preloaded bearings in the cartridges. The link is to a small shop that offers those cartridges as rebuilt units, as well as the related parts.

The newer Delta bearings should be easy to pull out, though you are on your own if the OWWM site doesn't have parts diagrams of shapers similar to yours. Delta things did not change much over the years, so it is possible to see old diagrams that still describe recently produced machines. Be sure to know of a machine shop that can pull the old and press the new properly, in case it takes that operation.

The Y2K model with the interchangeable spindle uses the 6204LL size bearings.
Try Accurate bearing for that size. About $5.00 each. I'll use Nachi or NTN for that application. There are better bearings, but that gets into a world of technical that I don't want to go do.

OWWM welcomes and encourages owners of USA-made machinery and your Delta clearly is that. Another qualifier is if this USA-made machine is now discontinued which your 43-375 would be.

The rub for age comes to posting things on Vintagemachinery.com, but I think there the discontinued rule works.

a couple of conversations that may be helpful

Thank you David and Bob. With this information and the places to get the bearings I feel comfortable taking this project on. I'll post photos and information once it starts.

FORUM GUIDELINES: Please review the guidelines below before posting at WOODWEB's Interactive Message Boards (return to top)

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.
  • Messages that accuse businesses or individuals of alleged negative actions or behavior are inappropriate since WOODWEB is unable to verify or substantiate the claims.
  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.
  • Responses that initiate or support inappropriate and off-topic discussion of general politics detract from the professional woodworking focus of WOODWEB, and will be removed.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).

Participants should undertake the use of machinery, materials and methods discussed at WOODWEB's Message Boards after considerate evaluation, and at their own risk.
