Buying a jointer: SCMI vs. Delta Invicta

I'm in the market for a new jointer. We are a group woodshop in NYC. There's already a 16" SCMI jointer here but a couple of businesses including myself are getting busier, quickly, and I'm going to supplement some of our existing machines.

I'm looking at a couple of used jointers that are available locally right now on Clist. One is a SCMI F3A 12" asking price $2000. The other is Delta Invicta RJ42 for $2250.

I love the idea of the extra width, but was wondering if anyone has experience comparing these two machines/makes. I know the Invicta stuff is supposed to be good but wondering if I'll find the SCMI easier to maintain, set up, etc. Or if one or the other might offer further longevity. Btw, the end game is to get a new Byrd head for whichever machine I purchase, and there's really no price difference between the cutter heads for the two jointers.

A rough estimate would be that 250-400 BF of material will get pushed through the machine a month. Thanks!

If you are planning to upgrade the butterhead anyway why aren't you looking at old American iron like Oliver?

For what it is worth I originally intended to buy an SCMI jointer at the Atlanta show but was able to compare it with a Martin in the same building. The Martin was three times the price but a much better value.

The Martin bed is one piece construction. The SCMI used heavy steel for the cast parts but when it got to the part closest to the cutterhead switched to some metal that reminded me of what they make beer cans out of.

It reminds me of when the altendorf salesman tried to explain all the plastic by saying it's safe enough for aviation.

I'd definitely be interested in an old machine if one had popped up locally. The planer I'm buying is an 18" Northfield #2. I've seen a 12" Northfield light duty jointer for $1600 online, but I'd have to pay for freight. Ideally I'm looking for something that wouldn't cost me more than a few hundred to go and pickup myself (within a couple hrs of NYC).

Do you think you'd get more for your money from an old oliver/northfield etc. as compared to a newer but still used euro machine?

Jointers are pretty simple machines so I think I'd go for the Delta and gain some capacity. The designs should be pretty similar as the Invicta jointers maintained the design as the previous generation of Delta which were made by……SCM;)

good luck,

But really scrutinize the fence. I've had "old USA" made jointers before where the fence was horrible. I have a SAC 12" and the fence is poor to fair. You don't want to have to check and adjust it every time it gets bumped.

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
