I think I know the answer to this question but I thought I would ask to be sure.
With an S4S machine like the SCM Sintex can the outside knife be replaced with a profiling head? I realize major material removal is not recommended but can you put a simple profile on the side of the board?
I had a Weinig Quattromat that was similar to the SCM Sintex. The Quattromat would allow for some profiling on the inside and outside heads, as well as the top head.
We made small moldings, lots of T&G and beadboard. The setup was so fast and easy that we used if for S4S of just 1 or 2 parts.
Ours had a long infeed table and fence, so it could joint or straight/flatten stock also. A wonderful machine.
I researched a SCM Sintex further and the side heads are not adjustable for height so it is strictly a 4 side planer.
You can pick up a used Quattromat for not much. I use mine for mostly for S4S but it will do a three sided profile without issue. Both side heads are adjustable.
I paid 16K for mine.
Mine went for $3,500 in 2010. Paid $22,000 new in 1998. It was in perfect shape, just a lousy auction.
