Veneer repair
5/9/14
I have to do some repairs to quarter sawn white oak veneer...dog chewed the corners of a veneer table. I cut back the veneer, repaired the substrate. I have some fairly close matched veneer for repair. BUT...the repairs have cross grain, so I can't hide the glue line in the long grain. I fear that any finish (stain and shellac) will darken the joint on the cross grain. The long grain joint will get hidden. HINTS?

Use a graining marker to draw grain across the joint. You can also cut grain lines with an exacto knife.
Can you continue the grain pattern from the existing over to the new piece?
Maybe make your joint follow the grain pattern. Hiding it as a grain line.

A zig-zag seam cut will minimize it, but as you are aware, nothing will hide it except a table cloth. If any cross grain line is unacceptable, replace the veneer for the entire width, or new top.

If the table is important & you want the repairs invisible, furniture touch-up experts do this everyday. Could cost couple hundred. Good luck.

Cut your veneer patch as a triangle. This reduces greatly a horizontal patch line and allows you better flow and matching of the grain
