Edgebander

I currently have a Holz Her edgebander. 1435SF C PVC. Works good. Smaller single phase unit with buffers. My issue is I have more clients wanting 3 mil banding. I can apply it and trim with the unit but no corner rounding. I use a Festool trim route with the 3 mil round over. Very time consuming. Route then sand and buff. I am a one man shop as of now. I am wondering what would be a good fit for me for a bander? I have a Striebig panel saw which gives me no chips.I will have to go used. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I dont have to stay with Holz Her, I am open to any brand but want to stick with a more big name brand.

We have a Biesse edgebander, we upgraded to it from an extremely old Ott edgebander. It's incredibly accurate, and easy to adjust if anything goes wrong. Even though you have a good saw that gives no chips, I would still argue that a pre mill unit is invaluable.

You got it right Tyler, I think after upgrading to a pre mill bander I woudnt go back. Cut parts to finished size everytime, extends blade life, as you will be able to get away with a bit more roughness as it will get milled off. The other thing I would add is make sure you have good tech support for what ever machine you do choose to get. Larger banders with lots of options work great when they do, but are like moody teenagers, they will quit at the first sign of anything they dont like. Thats where the good service comes in.

I am quite fond of our little Brandt Ambition, which I believe can be had with corner rounding. Ours doesn't, but we didn't need it.

Other guys are correct about the pre-mil. That pre-mil is analogous to air conditioning. Nobody in the 1800's would be willing to pay 1/4 of their earnings just to cool the house down...... until they've tried it, and then they'd pay whatever it took to get it.

To answer your question on premill yes. If you ever go to CNC you can run your bits a lot longer also. Even when we don't get a clean cut from a dull bit, the premill takes it right off. Also you cut all parts to exact size and set the premill to the thickness of your edgebanding.

Never had pre-mill edgebander so I'm curious to know - what about pre-mill cutter in the edgebanding machine itself? How long does it last, can it be sharpened, price...?

What makes it, presumably, last longer than, let's say saw blade, in terms of number of feet pre-milled vs number of feet cut by saw blade before chipping occurs?

I agree with the premill. You can set it to take off as much as 3mil and still give a good cut? I will have to do more digging on the premill. With the corner rounding sometimes i see a machine with a thing that looks like the router goes in a circle and others are not. I am not to familiar how exactly the corner round works as in the stations. I know the end result. I have seen corner scraping station also. Looked at a few videos but they dont tend to say much other then watching it go threw the machine. thanks for sharing.

In our biesse we regularly take off 3mil with the premill. I'm not sure about other machines, but our premill unit consists of two cutters, each with approx 100 diamond staggered blades. Very sharp, and a very clean cut.

Our corner rounder unit runs along the top of the piece, and drops down on the end, rounding the corner. It had both a top unit and a bottom unit, for all corners.

We have a Homag/Brandt 1230 with all the options, for its size it does a wonderful job. It had a few issues upon setup but Stiles followed through and haven't had any since.
In all reality it gets run 2-5 hours a day.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
