Summary
Here is a growing sawmill looking for a production manager in Iowa. This is a green sawmill feeding our dry kilns at an off-site location (within the organization). Production manager would oversee the production of the sawmill to ensure high quality products are being made efficiently, safely, and on time within budget. This position is an on the production floor position meaning most of the working day will be spent on the production floor ensuring production is meeting company goals & needs. The individual needs to have a strong comprehensive understanding of production and manufacturing. The individual is expected to need minimal supervision, self-directed, strong communication skills.
Requirements:
-Leadership: Abilities to manage a mill of 15-20 people. Driving a culture based on trust, respect, & motivating the team to drive objectives.
-Mechanical: Troubleshooting issues with equipment, understand how the setworks work on head saw, resaw, edger, etc.
-Expereince: A minimum of at least 2-3 years of experience as a production manager / supervisor in a working sawmill.
-Basic Computer Skills: Abilities to navigate Lewis Control software systems and Excel Worksheets.
-Willingness to grow: There is a great potential for this position to lead to a Sawmill Manager role.
-Production: Ability to manage production of 600K to 1m BF of hardwood per month.
-Species: Knowledge of either hardwood of softwood sawmill manufacturing.
-Inventory: organizational skills to manage inventory levels.
Responsibilities:
-Process optimization: analyze production to identify bottlenecks and implement process improvements to increase efficiency, reduce cost, and maximize the value of the material. Identify downtime issues and assign priority. Work with management on creating new metrics and being able to report on them.
-Quality control: work with director of quality control to ensure products meet company standards and specs. This entails checking lumber thickness several times a day, monitoring opening faces at the headsaw, monitoring edging at the edger, understanding importance of saw kerf.
-Human Resources: Provide input on HR related issues which could include hiring, and firing, helping establish facility overall goals along with individual employee goals during reviews.
-Coordination: With Director of sawmill operations on production plans, coordinating schedules, and organize resources to meet project timelines and goals
-Safety: will be responsible for coordinating with director of safety on implementation of new safety ideas & maintaining current safety in the workplace.
-Communication: Act as liaison between department staff & management. Reporting on progress and challenges seeing in the work environment.
-Leadership: Lead and motivate production teams, supervise staff, and resolve or be apart of the solution resolving issues pertaining to productivity.
-Troubleshooting: Must be able troubleshoot or help troubleshoot equipment breakdowns, mechanical and technology.
-Training: must understand how the machines work to assist director of sawmill operations with training of positions.
-Budget management: oversee budgets, track cost, find ways to minimize expenses while maximizing output.
-Lean: Have an understanding of lean & willing to further expand on their lean knowledge.
-Special projects: helps plan & execute special projects and evaluations.
