Job Summary
The Millwork Engineer is responsible for designing, engineering, and supporting the production of custom millwork, metalwork, and cabinetry projects. This role bridges design intent and manufacturing execution by producing accurate shop drawings, material specifications, and technical solutions that ensure quality, efficiency, and compliance with project requirements.
Key Responsibilities
• Develop detailed shop drawings, fabrication drawings, and CNC-ready files for custom millwork projects
• Interpret architectural drawings, specifications, and design concepts
• Engineer millwork components for manufacturability, structural integrity, and cost efficiency
• Select appropriate materials, hardware, finishes, and construction methods
• Collaborate with designers, project managers, production teams, and installers
• Resolve technical issues related to fabrication, assembly, and installation
• Review and respond to RFIs and design changes
• Ensure compliance with industry standards, building codes, and client specifications
• Support estimating by providing material takeoffs and technical input
• Participate in quality control reviews throughout production
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Wood Technology, Industrial Design, or related field (or equivalent experience)
• 3+ years of experience in millwork, cabinetry, or custom woodworking engineering
• Proficiency in CAD software (AutoCAD required; SolidWorks, Inventor, or similar preferred)
• Strong understanding of woodworking materials, joinery, hardware, and finishes
• Ability to read and interpret architectural and interior design drawings
• Knowledge of CNC machining processes and manufacturing workflows
• Strong problem-solving and attention to detail
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with CNC programming and optimization
• Familiarity with ERP or production management systems
• Experience in commercial or architectural millwork environments
• Knowledge of LEAN manufacturing principles
Work Environment
• Office and manufacturing floor environment
• Occasional site visits to job sites or client locations
• May require coordination across multiple active projects with tight deadlines
