Spray Paint High heat white on wood countertop?

OK, you'll probably think this is goofy, but...
Have a large piece of 3/4 finished wood that I am going to trim down to put as a countertop.
Now this countertop will only have cooking appliances on it. They get Hot.
I was thinking to spray the countertop with high heat white rust-oleum spray paint.
While it seems a simple solution, it just doesn't feel right.
Please tell me all the ways this is a bad idea.
Or please make suggestions how I can protect the wood from the hot appliances.

Put a sheet of stainless steel on top of it.

I'd be another vote for opting for a different material if the top is truly going to see fairly high temps and high use. Most all glues are going to start to have issues above 100F so even if the paint will withstand it the core may not. Beyond that a film finish on a top that sees decent use will be tough.
