Gun Cabinets

I finished these this weekend. They flank some existing cabinetry that was done by my buddy's shop. As you can tell his work is exquisite.
I shopped the carving out to a local cnc shop.
The install provided a bit of challenge where the cabinets met the existing cabinetry.

These are very elegant and fit nicely to your friends existing Cabinets. is this walnut?

Just one Question: Why didn't you cut out the existing trim on the side panel and mate the new cabinets flush under the cuts instead of cutting out the new cabinets to fit?

Everything is done in alder. Trying to match the finish was a process in itself.
I guess I could've cut the existing molding but that wouldn't have solved the issue with the raised panel.
I wasn't really sure what other options I had. I'd love to hear some other opinions.
