Ironic Cherry Cabinet

The irony in this cabinet without doors is that it is made almost entirely from cabinet doors. It is made with cherry with hickory shelves. All the parts were cabinet doors I got for a dollar a piece at a discontinued parts sale at my work. Each side is three cherry doors doweled together. My goal was to do as little cutting as possible, and I was not successful, haha. Due to the weight of the shelves and my paranoia that the sides weren’t strong enough, I made large shelf supports that would reinforce the doweled joints, and they worked splendidly. I had this cross veneered cherry panel that had this awesome eye-shaped grain pattern, which I centered in the middle of the cabinet. The pictures don’t really show it, but it looks like that big storm on Jupiter. It’s rad.

The bottom comes out two inches farther than the top. It isn’t readily visible, but gives it makes it look sturdy. It’s something that is apt to be overlooked, but appreciated. I think it makes up for the even spacing of the shelves, which I would not have done if I had not wanted to use the horizontal lines of the joints on the sides as a part of the design.

It is finished with multiple coats of linseed oil. The first few coats were reduced with lacquer thinner to ensure deep penetration. It retains the feel of the wood with a rich color. The oil hardens inside the wood.

I intend this cabinet to have a few large books on it, a few small statues, and plenty of space to keep it from looking cluttered. It was made for a large room with high ceilings.
