Like your oversized, thick, and durable cedar picnic table, I use thick, oversized parts of trees for massive projects. Please respond with the brand name of the spar urethane you used, as well as how you applied it, either with a foam brush, bristle brush, wipe-on varnish, or spray-on varnish. I have yet to finish any of my projects, as they are air drying, and I want as many ideas on the best type of finish for outdoor projects, and the brand name of what you achieve the best results with. Thanks for resonding.

HI
Thanks for your compliments on my picnic table.
I use Minwax spar urathane semi gloss and apply it by hand with a bristle brush in 3 light coats over a period of about 4 days. I have used a sprayer before but I have found for me the best way is to brush it on in light coats.
thanks again and best of luck to you.

I noted the brand name spar varnish you suggested. I used Helmsman spar varnish on a few projects, brushed on with a bristle brush, but tiny bubbles appeared in the wet surface, and the surface dried that way, and I'm not going to finish any more projects until I can find a brand name spar varnish that doesn't cause bubbles to appear in the surface. Have you had a similar problem? Is their a high quality, special type of varnish brush I should use, one that you use to achieve blemish-free results? Thanks again for responding.

HI Alan
Thanks for your response. I know what you mean about the bubbles you mentioned. When I first used Minwax's Helmsman spar urathane I did get some bubbles. I tried different techniques and found that the first coat has to be a VERY light even coat and let it dry for at least 24 to 48 hours before putting on the next coat also a light coat and let it dry for another 24 hours before the last coat that can be a bit heavier. This seems to take care of the "bubble effect" for me. I do use high quality bristle brushes for the spar varnish and it seems to help on getting a better application and even coat. Thanks again and hope you have great results!

About any type of varnish or epoxy will bubble but you can remove the bubbles with a what I call a bottle torch. You lightly allow the torch to heat the bubbles and they will burst and smooth right out.
