A Zaney Door

Listing #4012 Listed on: 12/06/2012 Name: steve

I was looking for a zaney door design for my sister's salon and along comes an idea from our Scott and his wonderful River Series cabinet. The problem was how did he hold his doors together? So I thought about it and tapered my cuts to zero at the top and bottom so that I could hold it together with the loose slips. I may run a groove later at top and bottom to insert some steel! I'm coloring the glass now with some blue and yellow enamel mixed in to poly lacquer and will 'Everdure' treat the wood against the westerlies before gluing up with polyurethane glue. So this is the way I did it. I still don't know how Scott holds his doors together!

What keeps this solid wood door from massive expansion and contraction?

Now you got me worried Dave with words like massive! I will pour on extra marine grade Everdure. I may put a cam on it for us to see what happens daily! The steel bars top and bottom may help the straightness. We know it breaks all the rules eh?

All solid wood moves with normal changes in relative humidity, and finish will not prevent it. It can slow it down, but will not eliminate it. At 36" wide, I would expect perhaps a quarter inch or more from this, maybe even a half inch. As it moves it may also cup a bit - or lose it flatness. Steel may hold it flat, but if it is fixed in place, it will restrict the movement of the wood, causing it to split later when things dry out a bit. See Bruce Hoadley's book Understanding Wood.

At least when you do a job on your own place you only have yourself to worry about and can try these things. maybe the jamb can adjust between winter and summer on a cam! Perhaps I would not risk this design for a paying client. See how it goes. Our seasons are not as extreme here in New Zealand.

I love the design and thought. Very nice piece.
