I just love walnut. To me these are masterpieces.

Wow, that's an amazing piece of imagination and art as well. Thanks a lot for sharing the idea on this site with all of us. I think I will also get one for my home.

Love it. I too like to use high-end wood in classically low-end products. I have some shop cabinets I am putting walnut drawer fronts on soon. some find this wasteful, I find it perfect use. Heck, where else will I see and appreciate these items more than in my shop....

I agree they are a thing of beauty but I ask myself why? Walnut is such a premium wood - why would anyone use it for sawhorses, small shelf units, etc.?

At first I kind of agreed with the last guy, then I saw the last picture with the glass top and it all made sense. That is a very unique way of combining workshop durability and craftsmanship with indoor furniture. Good job.

Why do some find it a "waste" if we make beautiful things for our own use? Most of us spend all day making beautiful things for others. Rarely do we take time to do it for ourselves. Kudos.

Most of my shop fixtures, jigs, sleds, and some patterns are made from walnut, cherry, maple (some bird's eye and figured), mahogany, and ebony. I have to work with these items all the time and I just love looking at them. No waste of wood here.

Thank you for all of your comments. This is a project I had been thinking of for some time. If you look closely at the project these are knock down and portable. We practiced on a non premium wood for the design and proportion. The last house we built we felled a cherry tree and made a set for the owners. They were greatly appreciated and have brought me other work. They are also a great conversation starter. I am also very proud to pull these out on-site. Walnut is a less expensive product than the woods we use in our shop, and no less beautiful. We also need to use a hardwood because of the sliding dovetails. Thanks again for the encouragement

Heck, walnut grows like a weed here. It's not special in any way unless figured. Nice work on the joints.

I use Honduras mahogany for test pieces on the moulder.

I'm just a four man shop, but apparently I've been pretty wasteful over the past year. Between cabinets, paneling, and furniture we've probably burned through 6000bd ft of walnut from log to finished product. I'm starting to treat the stuff like "just boards". Yesterday when I was sorting lumber for the next job I was almost bothered by 12" boards with a single knot thinking I guess I really can't put that in the pile for flooring (our next walnut job). So I'm wondering, other than the darker dust film it leaves in the shop, can a guy ever get sick of the stuff? As boring as I find maple I'm kind of looking forward to a color change.
