Personal Item Box

Listing #496 Listed on: 12/30/2006 Name: Joe Machtemes

Company Name: M. ThomasThis is a box I made for my wife for Christmas. The lid marquetry consists of 14 pieces of dyed curly maple for the rose and leaves, highlighted/shaded with oil paints. Walnut burl for the stem. The oval is mother of pearl. The corner brackets have a bleached maple burl border, and walnut burl inside the border. The canvas veneer is madrone burl, with a solid curly maple edge.
The under-side of the lid is quilted maple.
The box itself, and the door frames are curly maple, with madrone burl on the outside of the door panels, and quilted makore for the inside of the panels. The inside panel of the box, on the sides, are veneered with bleached maple burl.
The drawer boxes are maple, and the fronts are veneered with quilted maple, and inlayed with 2 strips of bloodwood and a strip of ebony. I ended up using sliding dovetail joinery on the drawer boxes, because the 4mm dovetail bit I ordered from woodrat did not make it here on time. I used black crushed velvet on the drawer bottoms.
The base features a hidden drawer, that operates on sliding dovetail runners, as do the other drawers.
Thanks for looking, Joe.

Joe it is beautiful! Wow.

How did you sign it? Will your grandchildren be able to turn it over and see a family name rather than "peoples republic...". I am a big believer in legacy as well as superb quality. Again superb work!

KD, I did burn a message into the back for my wife, and signed and dated it. Thank you for the compliment, Joe.

I love the proportions of the box, drawers and doors. How tall and wide etc. is it?

It certainly is a tasty piece.

Is this your design
or one from one of
the mainstream

Very nice you did a wonderful job. What type of clear finish did you do on it? Did you shoot a clear on it or use an oil finish?
