Cherry/Walnut headboard

I used a piece of burled walnut sliced to 1/4" then flipped around to get the radiating effect on the oval inlay. This is my first time using my lathe so the posts are not great but the biggest problem is hidden by the mattress.

nicely done...what was your method for the arch? Steam bent or laminated? I can't really tell from the pic if it's laminated or not.

I'ts laminated from 1/4" thick strips.

A very nice headboard indeed! I love the walnut & cherry combination. One consideration; On a visual standout item like this, have the woodgrain follow through the part (cherry area's on either side of walnut are of not one flow through board.) To have such a nice piece, sacrifice the section of inlay and have boards follow through so the eye is not distracted visually from the work.
Great piece, wouldn't mind it on my own bed. (mine is walnut and birdseye)

great work. two things. i think the bed would be stronger if you put a wide rail between the posts down low. the same as the side rails. also, to learn classic shapes and proportions for turning and everything else read "The Gentleman and Cabinet Maker's Directory" by Chippendale. it's like $10 from amazon. get it.

I like the peice a lot. Noce work. Is the body a glue up or is it vennered ply? I was just wondering if it was a floating panel, and if so how much room for movement you had to allow in the rails.
