CNC Axis Out Of Alignment

08/18/2014

From original questioner:

Last week I brought the head of our 5 axis SCM tech 5 down onto the middle of the work piece sideways causing the HSK tool holder to nut to attempt to cut into the panel. (I had the wrong zone set, it should have come down, then machined the edge of the work piece)

At first I could not find any real damage, however since I have had a lot of tool change issues, the head will come down to pick up a tool, attempt 3 times, then throw up a tool insertion error.

SCM tech services tell me I may have knocked the 'B' or 'C' axis out of alignment, and they need to use a rectified rod and a dial indicator to re align the axis. anyone been in this situation before? calling out a tech is expensive and the owner of the company is not to happy with me!

Phil,
Sorry about your crash. Unfortunately, when you have a machine crash with any real velocity, the chances of pushing a work unit(spindle) out of alignment is quite likely. With a 3/4 axis machine, the supervisor or operator can easily adjust the unit, or adjust the parameters to put everything back into spec. My advice is to get a technician in and assist in the realignment process so that you can do it yourself in the future. Take notes and get a list of tools that you will need to perform this yourself. This will happen again, because of set up, or programming errors. Not everything is in your control, but if you learn well, your ability to adjust the machine will be invaluable. Money well spent. Remind the owner of that if he grumbles.

I ran a MotionMaster 5 axis before retiring. I would never start a program without having my hand on the potentiometer. Even then I had a couple of minor crashes. Most of them were mistakes on cutter length. Yeah I know, stupid stuff! Can't you see the error in the cuts? Cut some thicker material, check square to the table, rotate the head 90 degrees and run another piece, repeat, etc.....I would also suggest you should be able to see misalignment when it drops off the old cutter before picking up the new one. Mike is right, no one is perfect. Sure the boss might not be happy, but I bet he can't come out and run the machine like you can. He'll get over it if you learn from the mistake and make him more money!

Got the 5 axis fixed today! watched the technician and learned how to dial it back in. Technicks sells the rod, and I have a dial indicator incase it happens again. However I will try to avoid it!
