We have been having a problem as of late with our applied edges, bevel, crescent, cascade. The style really doesnt matter.
Edges are being apllied to a pb core w/ titebond II & are tape clamped.
During the installation the "seam" between the countertop laminate and the applied edge is perfect. Within hours however the perfect "seam" disappears and we are left with an unsightly gap.
I have thought the cause is a swelling taking place from the glue. we are applying the glue per the mfg. instructions.
We have been doing this for 15 years and while I have seen this happen here and there occasionally, it has become a real problem.
Anyone else ever have/seen this problem?

My guess would be the pb core is the culprit. Like you I have seen this happen before...maybe 5 times in 15 years. Around me the pb varies in quality. Some is very porous with much larger chips in the core...found out the hard way that it does't lend itself to after applied edges of any type. I now make sure we use 100% pine core board.
The guy who trained me on it years ago also believed that loading up the bottom edge with extra glue would help keep the top edge tight due to more swelling where there was more glue. Not sure if it works but I've allways done it!

Yes it has happened to us. Too much glue. Apply glue to the bevel strip rather than the countertop edge.

Joe, the board was my initial thought as
well. We have some pine core coming in to us to try.
Dave, we apply all glue to the edge strip, not the core, and only a very small bead above the tongue of the bevel. I have thought about trying no glue above the tongue and see what happens on a sample.
But I'm not sure about long term sending tops out like that.

Haven't worked with HPL for a few years now but, when I used to put the edges on, instead of gluing it to particle board I fastened a strip of 1/2 inch MDF to the front of the particle board to glue to...can't remember a problem with swelling. My 2 cents.

I know it goes against what mfg says to do but I use my contact cement on ours and it works well for us. Try a sample and see if it works for you. Also I have a apartment and did bevel edge in it back in 1997 and it still looks great today.

Try Roo Glue or Wilsonarts version.
