Solar Kiln Glass

Are different types of glass more or less suitable for solar kilns? May 11, 2005

Question
Is there any degradation of solar kiln effectiveness if the glass used is an opaque glass such as found in shower stalls? It is still a clear glass, but one surface tends to diffuse light.

Forum Responses
From Gene Wengert, forum technical advisor:
Yes there is, as such glass transmits perhaps 80% of the light. On the other hand, all this means is that it will take you 20% longer to dry. If you are in a hurry, then solar drying is not what you want, anyway.

Does this glass typically radiate less heat at night?

From Gene Wengert, forum technical advisor:
I doubt that such glass has different IR emission properties.
