Wood For Carving An Outdoor Sculpture

09/15/2016

From original questioner:

I have been asked to make a carving of an eagle that is eight feet wide and will be mounted outside. Material needs to be 5 to 6" thick and withstand the elements. Any thoughts of what would be the best material to use?

Sign Foam works well, paints well, and is weather resistant. It's also light weight.

Precision Board from Coastal Enterprises. They have different densities, depending on what finish you are looking for. It machines great.

Durafoam is what I would use

At 5-6" thick I am sure you have worked toolpathing and machine capabilities, just a thought in deep carve and i have done a good bit of it.

i would use a 15# or better good grade of HDU suggested so far. how "outside" is it ?

The EGA is 4.5" thick cut in two slices using 3" as the base
