Small Press For Laminating

Has anyone used the small Hydraulic presses that are sold for auto mechanic work for laminating small wood parts? I think they would work but the piston is center mounted and I would be concerned with distributing the pressure evenly. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I am going to go out on a limb here and guess that you don't have a lot of woodworking experience or a lot of experience in laminating.

I have plenty of both, but your question is too vague for me to begin to respond to.

I had a feeling it may have been too vague; sorry for the confusion. The press I am referring to is sold for mostly pressing bearings and various metal type work. They usually consist of 4 posts with a hydraulic ram in the center. With 40 years of woodworking experience and the owner of a 4' X 8' cold press, I am always looking for better ways to laminate short runs and smaller parts.

I have used exactly what you are talking about, but only to do small (12" X 12") samples. It works just fine, as long as you get it in and under pressure quickly. I used two 12" X 12" X 1/4" steel plates (one top, one bottom) to distribute the pressure evenly. I left the samples in over night, probably 14 hours, to make sure the glue was cured.

I wouldn't try it for anything much larger than 12" X 12", but it did work for me.

Why not just pick up a vacuum bag or small vacuum frame table.

A bearing press is going to concentrate all the pressure right in the center. You would need a very thick wood plate above and below the work for it to be effective. I don't think it would be worth it for larger than 6" x 6" pieces. Plus any bearing press over around 12" wide is going to be very costly. You could easily set up for vacuum presses for the same or less. If you have good mechanical abilities you can easily cobble together a vacuum system from inexpensive new or used parts.

We've got a hydraulic frame press sold for mechanics. The pressure slowly leaks off. A mechanical press would be better. Press screws are available individually. Jorgensen about $25 each. Roton sells Acme rod & nuts but unless you are going to use a lot the Jorgensen ones are a better deal.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
