SAC shaper star-delta starter

I need some knowledge about switches on the control panel of an SAC T-145 shaper.

The user manual does not offer a diagram or an explanation of the main power switch. The main power switch has three positions: O, Y, and Delta.

The wye position sends power to the spindle motor. If the knob is turned past the wye to the delta position, there is a slight change in the sound of the motor. No other change is apparent.

My understanding is that this is a star-delta starter and that Y represents a star or wye type wiring configuration. But, can anyone tell me why the starter would have a switch for Y and one for Delta and how I should be using these two positions?

Should I turn the switch to Delta after the spindle has reached it's full RPM?

Also, there is a button above the knob with a diagram next to it depicting a rotating spindle. This button does not seem to do anything at all. Does anyone have a machine with a similar control panel?
Originally, I thought this button would send power the spindle motor, but it does nothing. Power to the spindle motor seems to be controlled by the knob with the Y and Delta.

I apologize, but the image is turned on it's side.

I used to work overseas in northern Europe. Most of the stationary machines I used would have a manual soft-start system of some kind, where one leg of a 3 phase system was used to get a motor up to an intermediate RPM for a few seconds, then boosted up to operating speed with a switch similar to what you described. Can't say about your mystery button though.

Thank you Jared. A colleague mentioned the same idea, but he was surprised that it would be a manual switch and not an automated process built into the starter. I appreciate your response.

The button and key switch are for spindle reverse or CW rotation. Start on Y switch to delta to run.

I am pretty sure the yellow/orange button is a secondary safety system that has to be pushed, when starting in reverse rotation and lights up to let you know it is in reverse rotation while running. The black knob that selects forward or reverse rotation- by the arrow diagrams around the spindle, needs to be in reverse rotation for the yellow/orange button to activate the secondary safety setup and energize the spindle. It will/should do nothing if the black button is in forward rotation.
I cannot offer any insight on the wye/delta start button.

Peter and DOM,
I appreciate your responses.
You are exactly correct. I seem to have everything in order now.
Thanks again for everyone's help.

That's a new one on me. My machines, equipped with they/delta system, all have a timer that switches between the startup mode and the run mode in a very short time. I think the purpose is to reduce the inrush current that direct start induces.

Our old shop had several European made machines with a manual start wye delta switch.

With a three phase motor, the are two main ways to wire the three field windings.. wye places two windings in series, and delta gives full voltage across each field winding. Wye is used to start, as the motor has far less torque and will allow the motor to spin up to full rpm at a slower rate, and less likely to cause damage to belts etc by trying to start too quick.

I recall on the planer and jointer, and shaper if you switched too quickly from the first to second position, the belts would squeal like hell.

Standard procedure is to start on the wye, let it come up to speed and switch to delta for full power/running.

All my newer equipment now does the same thing, but using relays and electronic timers - it’s done automatically. But you can still hear the audible change when the change is made from wye to delta.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
