Shaker cherry edge banding

I recently had to run some 3mm Shaker Cherry edge banding and was appalled at how the color on the edge didn't even come close to the color on the face.

I admit I am new to running edge banding, but the whiteish edge it left just didn't seem right.

Any suggestions or comments?

Mark

Let it see some UV light. It will match up once it does

you need to turn the heater/blowers on the edge bander, clean your buffers and sharpen the blades

Rich,

I could have been more specific, but I was referring to a color match to Wilsonart Shaker Cherry laminate.

cabinetmaker, my scrapers are new and my edgebander doesn't have a heater/ blower on it.

I got the edge banding from Charter Ind. so there is no telling on who actually produced the banding.

I will try a heat gun just out of curiosity and hope the UV kicks in.

UV light isn't going to do anything to a PVC edgebanding. I would agree your trimmers aren't working correctly if you are getting this with PVC.

Thanks guys for the info.

The bander is only 3 months old, so I believe the trimmers are still in good shape as well as the scrappers.

I'll start to look in those areas and see if I can track it down.

It was not as noticeable when I was running the 1mm band, but seemed very pronounced with the 3mm.

Hi Mark,

It sounds like you are scaping too much material off. Darker colours, such as the one you are using, tend to go milky or cloudy when scaped to much. Try looking into how close your trimmers are cutting. Try to let your trimming mototrs do all the heavy cutting and just scape enough off to remove the knife marks.

We've had good luck just doing our final cleaning wipedown with a cloth w/acetone. Do use a cloth with just enough acetone to do the job, and Don't use it on the printed face. We found it to take the milky sheen off the edge and make it look more like the base color of the body of the edgbanding. The advice offered about scraping thickness is also solid, in our experience. The scrapings should be very thin, and should readily break when stretched between your hands, with no audible sound.

Nathan,

That was exactly the issue I was having.

When I checked how much material was left on after the trimmers I was shocked.

I have one of the newer edgebanders where settings are saved into programs for varying sizes of edge banding and apparently one was never created for 3mm PVC banding (one was for 3mm wood tape) and the scaper was doing all of the work. After I got it dialed in, all was well.

Thanks to all those who got me looking in the right direction, I got it figured out this morning.

"Shaker Cherry edge banding" - what a conflict of terms. Worse than "jumbo shrimp" or "military intelligence".

Even if it is a 'color', the Shakers did not use stain as it would be considered frivolous ornament and therefore a place for the devil to play.

David,

I couldn't agree more.

I gag at the sight of it every time I see it. The trend will pass, just like the countertops that had maple butcher block laminate.

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
