Castors

We have a number of cheap furniture dollies in the shop that we use to move our parts carts around. I've come to hate these as it only takes a small bit of debris on the floor to cause the hard plastic wheels to bind/skid. Looking for suggestions for a better castor to use on our concrete floors. Price is a factor as I'd be needing 64 of them. Thank you

Made the same mistake and bought cheap small casters. They cannot take the weight or the debris. Only solution is bigger wheels, that's why moving dollies have such big wheels.

Ever seen the old factory carts? That's why they are designed like they are, BIG WHEELS. They had to roll over old wood floors in the early days, not smooth concrete.

i have 30 or so carts in the shop that we use to spray parts on, seems like there are never enough. I’ve got quite a bit of experience with the good and bad ones. The best I’ve used are from Lowes, 4” or 5” and gray rubber and are about $11. The second best are from Lowes which are red and have larger paddle type locks which are handy for when you don’t want the cart to move like when you’re using it as a bench, about $7 each. I picked up 4 blue ones from harbor freight the other day for 2 bucks each and the are surprisingly great. Roll good and swivel good. If your replacing many and don’t need a huge weight rating then those are your best bet.

Thanks very much for the responses. After Mike mentioned it, I remembered that I have 2 tool cabinets on dollies with the grey rubber wheels that have worked well. I'm going to relocate them one of the parts carts and see how they do under load. If they handle the weight I'll see if I can find a more direct supplier than Lowes. Thanks again.

Another vote for the Harbor Freight casters. I just put two of our assembly tables on some 2.5" diameter swivel casters that are working well. They were only about $2.50 each with a 200 lb load capacity.

4-5" minimum if you want to avoid the problem you first mentioned

its all about what you plan to use the carts for. Ours are used to take stacks of doors from one station to the next, it mostly face frames are placed on them and carted in and out of the spray area. A lot of different uses. I’ve got ones with the big gray ones that are used for the heavy stuff and lighter ones for the light stuff. Here are my two favorites from Lowes that I mentioned.

I buy 5" gray, locking and swiveling castors, they work great. Ebay has the best prices I have found.

One of the best investments we ever made was to build 30 carts all the same height as the lowest position for our scissor-lift work bench. This allows for one man to move incredibly heavy products onto and off the assembly bench single handed.

We used to have a collection that was arrived at organically. There were probably six or seven different heights with at least that many different footprints. They were miserable to operate.

Having all the carts a common height allowed us to double stack base cabinets.
The scissorlift benches will rise exactly high enough to slide one cabinet onto another. Sometimes we gang two or more carts in a row. The carts each have a swing up handle so moving them empty long distances isn't a back-breaker.

These new carts have terrifically enhanced our storage capacity. Owing to shortage of Mexicans in the window manufacturing plants our job sites are taking longer and longer to get to the finish line. Windows you used to be able to get in 3 weeks now take 10 weeks. The window hangs up the drywall and the drywall hangs up everything else.

The best thing we did was spend some money on the castors. This is the most important part. Without a great castor you will struggle.

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
