A way to glaze copper farm sink?
10/2/17
Crazy question here. I’m wrapping up a huge kitchen that has a copper farm sink with scrolls and flowers in the apron. It was advertised in the pic that the pattern in the apron was blackened like it was glazed. When it arrived it wasn’t. He decided to keep it. He has asked me if there is a way to darken the insides of the carvings like with a glaze. I’m under no obligation or anything but this client has been really good to me and I consider him a friend and I’d like to help him out if I can. So question is what to do? Glaze, I’m sure wouldn’t last long, maybe some sort of paint? Any thoughts? Thanks

You are looking for patina, not glaze. Look up liver of sulphur. You also have to determine if they clear coated the copper. If they did, you'll need to strip it with lacquer thinner before any patina will work.

You can use a black patina solution used to darken copper foil and solder on stained glass items, available from stained glass suppliers. I use it frequently for this sort of thing.
Put it on with a q-tip or cloth, let it work and then wipe off the excess and let it dry. Buff the surrounding suface back to original sheen with 0000 steel wool or the like and then apply a wax like Rennisance wax.
Another option might be to apply dark tint Briwax to the carvings and wipe off the excess.
But, really- time and use is going to give it the best finish.
