I'm about ready to purchase my first edge bander.

Is there anything special I need to consider about the different brands of edge banding? I don't foresee using anything under 1mm pvc.

And while I'm asking, what kind of glue seems to work best for you guys and what considerations do I need to take into account?

We use 1mmpvc banding almost exclusively and all our profile knives are 1mm, we have a large Brandt and have been using jowat glue but it’s a little stringy firvmy taste and will be switching soon to something better with more viscosity. We use a lot of acrylics and supermat melamine panels and want to get the thinnest glue line possible, best to choose Bander and then get advisevon the glue from the manufacturer. We are switching to Henkel in advise of stiles tech guy.in terms of brands of tape , you must use whatever matches your panel andcutxwull come from them and I have not found any real differences. The folks who have the airtronic or laser machines have the biggest problems as not all colors or patterns are made in that special tape.

We've used many brands of banding over the years most with no problems. At one time there was a problem with some wide 3mm that came in cupped. Don't remember brand. If you get a contour bander try to use the banding made for them. It is softer and goes around corners better.

As for adhesive, we've long used Dorus. Sticks good enough to pull the fibers out of the board. Been using Jowat on the countour bander, stringy but holds well. You need to get the correct adhesive for the machine speed and be sure your machine temperature controller keeps the set temperature. Check the temperature at the application roller with a infrared reader. Some machines can't melt fast enough for thick panels and the temperature will go down. I had a Holzher that suffered from that. Cheap adhesives usually have a lot of filler that doesn't help them stick. KLEIBERIT was recomended on this site. I haven't used it. I've consided trying clear, unfilled, but haen't gotten around to it. Maybe someone on here can tell you about it.

Since I've posted this I have been doing a lot of searching on this subject.

This is a new bander and it's going to come with Jowet glue, and second, I opted for the hot air option after seeing it in operation and applying an edge band with zero glueline visibility.

As far as selection, Rehau claims to have over 1000 color matches in stock for the hot air option.

As I said in my post, this all new to me, so I'm not trying to talk with authority, just asking enough questions to get myself somewhat educated on the subject.

Good for you Mark, wish I could afford one of those babies. Just check with your sheet good suppliers and rehau if the colors you want to use are available. If you can switch back and for to glue or only hot air,,sounds like you’ve got it made. Harold

Which model of edgebander did you get?

I got a Biesse Akron 1330.

I've dealt with nothing but solid wood my whole life, so this is a first for me. That's why I'm asking questions.

We get a lot of melamine board from Premier EuroCase I think they stock "laser" banding for all of their colors. Their board is the best we've used.
