Fixing SCM Basic 1 edgebander

Our edgebander suddenly quit on us this past week. It looks like the heater for the glue pot is broken or the thermometer itself is faulty. Getting support and service for this machine is difficult so I'm wondering if anyone has any tips on how to diagnose the problem. I am somewhat handy with electrical matters however I don't have any manual or specs for this machine and there are none on line to assist. Any suggestions and advise (other than throwing the machine out) is greatly appreciated. thanks

I hae a K201 which is very similar to the Basic 1. I will take a photo of the exploded view of the glue pot and the parts list on Monday. Chances are that the parts haven't changed. SCM has been quick in getting parts out when I have needed them.
I think you have at least two heaters, one or two in the pot and one in the applicator shaft. They do burn out eventually. Is the applicator roller hot? If not then that is the problem heater. Is the glue pot melting? Does the display stay at room temperature or does it heat part way?
If this is the only problem then it should be a cheap fix. I have not removed my glue pot before so I can't offer disassembly advice.
I have though about offering some short videos dealing with problems individual problems with the solutions I have found. If there is an interest I will put one or two together. Disclaimer: I am just a cabinetmaker not a technician.

Thanks for your response. Its an odd situation. The thermostat kicks in and moves to normal operating temp. but the glue is cold and not even melted. There is something wrong between the thermometer and the heater or both are broken. Everything was working fine the week before.

It sounds like the element in the glue pot is burned out but the element in the applicator shaft is still good. The display is reading the applicator temperature. The good news is that the element in the pot is easier to access.

If you have any diagrams on how to properly remove the pot and heater, please pass them on. I have never taken this machine apart. Thanks

You do not have to take the glue pot off you have to replace the heating elements. It is quite simple to do. First the heating elements are long round (finger shaped) tubes with a brown wire coming out of theme that containes the wires. These burn out after awhile as any heating element will do. Turn on the machine and the heating elements. Being very careful see if they are getting hot. There are two under the glue pot and one or two where the glue is supplied (i believed this is from memory) The ones getting hot are good and the ones that stay cold are bad. There is a small set screw holding each of these in. You loosen the set screw and the heating element will come out. Trace the wire to see which contactor the wires go to. You will have to run the new wires to the contactor and install a new heating element. Then it should heat up just fine. I had a basic 2 for 20 years and know it pretty well. I have three new heating elements for it in my office but i do not know if it will fit a basic 1 or not. I replaced the basic 2 about a year ago still have it. All manuals etc if that will help

The machine is not in the greatest condition. The 3 main heating elements sit on the side of the pot with the set screw under the pot. There's about an 1" clearance to access the set screws and they don't come easily–I imagine because of the heat. And in one case, the element is sitting too far in for the set screw to do anything. Thus, I thought I would pull the pot and clean the entire machine. Without a breakdown of assembly, it's not easy to figure out how the pot is removed as it sits on a cylinder shaft and with the old glue hardened I don't want to break anything without knowing about all the fasteners that hold this thing. From what I can tell the elements should all get replaced. At what point is it worth fixing the machine. It was running fine without a hitch for the 4 years we have had it. I knew this day would come.

So I can fix an engender but I can't figure out how to resize a photo to upload. Here is the part number for the heaters for the K201 glue pot.

0733732101F - 0.60kw 250vac heater.
0733732000B. - 0.80 kw 250vac heater

Buy both if your pot is cold.

0733731900A. - 1.00 kw 240 vac
This is the heater for the pump roller unit.
