What is the difference between an automatic and a semi-automatic edgebander? and also is it worth looking into chinese made ones?

The terms automatic and semi automatic are irrelevant for edgebanders. What you should be thinking about is what are your current and future needs. A bander can speed up production probably more than any other machine. A small machine can band a kitchen in an hour or so.
What is your volume of work? How much space? What is your goal for growth? Thin tape only or commercial jobs with 3mm?
Once you answer these questions (and more) then start talking to sales people and shops similar to yours.
If you buy Chinese then purchase through a dealer that supports parts for it. I bought a used machine and it is reliable after I cleaned and set it up. If you do the math you will find that a bander will pay for itself in short order.

I've run banders a long time and don't know what a "semi-automatic" bander is. Does that mean the little hot air banders where you manually push the parts past the banding applicator? Most people think of a bander as a machine that moves the work, on a chain, past the different stations. You can find lots of videos on line.
