Contour Edgebanding

Okay, I've searched this forum and not a lot came up on this. I'm taking on an ongoing project that has some small pieces (approx 6" x 24") with a curved edge that will need to be edge banded. It's not enough to warrant a large contour machine but having a small machine and a way to trim the edges might be just the ticket. We would be using .5 mm (wood and pvc) and 1 mm (pvc) banding. I tried stacking and spraying my edges and banding with contact adhesive and still the cleanup was a time killer. So, my questions are - Is there a way to adhere banding to an edge that is clean and quick to deal with or would I be better off looking at a small contour bander of sorts? What is the best way to trim a shaped edge? What kind of bander has worked well for you guys who do this? Is there specialty banding involved or can I just use the normal stuff? I'm open to all ideas at this point! Thanks in advance.

You could look into one of these, they are a hand held unit but the sell a table you can put them in to make them a stationary unit. Trimming shouldnt be an issue, we had one for about 2 years and just trimmed with a plane iron or flush plane for 0.5 and 1 mm. For 2mm or 3mm we used the router they sell. We grew out of ours fairly quickly and purchased a SNX semi auto bander. The Festool fit our needs for what we bought it for, sounds like it could fit yours aswell, especially if you are tight on space,or there isnt enough volume to drop the cash for a big one.

If I were looking for a super down and dirty way to trim contours I would build a profiled sled/carrier and band the parts and send them through the sander barely skinning the substrate to hit the top face then ditch the carrier and run the second face.

If there were money in the job I'd be looking at a hand held contour bander, festool already posted,virutex, et al.

If you need a nice professional trim on the contour (not something than can be done with a shop made single edge razor blade trimmer) there isnt many options.

Festool bander is awesome. I have had 1 for over 4 years and had zero problems. Works great, clean and easy to use. 10x better than the other handhelds with glue pots.

One of the pieces I will need to do has banding all the way around. How do you finish it off? It looks like Festool has a nifty trimmer that lets you cut to exact length for a good seam but by then the glue on the last couple of inches has hardened. Do you somehow reactivate it to get that last bit to stick?

I haven’t done a full part like that, but the cutters they have work great. You can always use a heat gun to warm up an area. It applies the glue to the tap and you have a little bit of working Time with it. Glue temp is adjustable. It works best with 1mm pvc, the.5mm stuff gets to hot and can be difficult to get good finish

Okay, guys - thanks for the input! I have reached out to a local Festool dealer and they are going to set up a demo for me to make sure it will do what I need. This little unit seems to be pretty highly regarded from what I've seen so far. I'm on the right track now!
