SCM Planer volt conversion 440v to 220v

2/27/20
Cian Member

I recently purchased a 2001 SCM S630 planer that originally ran on 220volts, it now runs on 440volts. I am looking to understand what is required to internally convert the machine back to running on 220volts.

Something doesn't add up. What country are we talking about? Are you talking 3 phase? I thought it was 480.

I just went through the same thing with a SCM shaper. There was a diagram on the wiring box on the side of the motor, it made no sense to me so I had my electrician do it. He it wasn't really quick for him either.
I've had to do this on a few other machines and the diagram on the motor tag was easy for me to understand, not with this shaper.

The planer was made in Italy, 440v is european.
SteveL, was the solution just moving the wiring around or also replacing parts?

for the shaper, yes, but he also adjusted the contactors too I think because the amperage increase.
On my planer I also had to change "heaters" which are like fuses but I don't know if that will apply to yours. I would give SCM a call and ask to talk to a service rep. you will most likely sit on hold for a while but might be of help.

To my knowledge there are some woodworking machines that can be wired differently or changed to match the voltage power supply of your building. I believe the majority of machines are built or ordered for what ever voltage you have . If you decide to move or buy a used machine you need to get a transformer to install between your machine and your power source. You have to get the machine to match your voltages, they make one for every combination. Used ones I have seen sell for $25 and new ones can be in the thousands for big cnc’s and bigger equipment.

Cian, the motor wiring would need to be altered, inside the pecker head (thats where the wires go into the motor) there will be a diagram showing 440v wiring and 220v wiring, wires will be lettered or numbered. Going from 440 to 220 will increase amperage draw so fuses (heaters) and contactor should be checked for use of higher amp draw. Most contactors will have adjustable amp settings. Most 3 phase motors are dual voltage and as such you may find that the fuses and contactor are sized accordingly. The process is not difficult but I would suggest a industrial electrician do it if you are not sure. Regular commercial electricians do not always understand industrial wiring.

As Mic said, it's likely just a matter of switching the wiring in the peckerhead. Low & high voltage schematics should be on the peckerhead lid & if not, SCMI should be able to give it to you.

I had to rewire 6 motors on my weinig moulder. It was wired high voltage. Took all day between phone calls to weinig & texting pictures & phone calls with my buddy who was walking me through the process, but once I got my mind around it, it wasn't hard. The motors had either 6, 9 or 12 wires. I had to also change out all the breakers in the moulder because they were too light.

Transformers aren't that expensive. I used to have a huge 36" cast iron double head planner that ran on 440 volts. I think I paid $1000 for a transformer about the size of a kitchen sink cabinet. No need to change the heaters if you run it on the voltage it was built to run on.

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
