I’ve recently started a new job “opportunity.” I had a guy contact me,he’s a new contractor.Young guy,28-29 years old. Business savvy. He proposed, he gets a shop together, and I come build cabinets for him. The first two or three sets, I would just get paid by the day($200) While the shop gets settled and work out all kinks with it being a new shop.Then we would renegotiate.I have no help. I’m the only one in the shop. I measure the houses. Had draw the set of cabinets. Cut out,build,sand,paint,assemble and install. Currently on set #6. There has been no talk of renegotiation. $200 a day is not worth all the work it takes for one man to put a set of cabinets in 6-7 days. But how much could I possibly expect to make?

Where in the country are you ? Here in south western Ct , I can not live on $200 a day . How much is each job worth ? And you have no help , how ? The jobs must not be too involved . What do you think you’re worth ?

First mistake was that you didn't get the negotiation written down in a contract. Unless you just didn't mention it. The owner can hold off for months, saying that the new shop hasn't been sorted out yet to his satisfaction. You're screwed right now. Hope you have a plan B.

Rich C is right. This "business savvy" guy is working you like a rented mule. When you keel over at the end of this run, he'll look for another sucker to make him a bunch of money. Renegotiate now! Or start your own shop and charge what it's worth.

I live in South Georgia.$200 a day for this area is descent pay.The Cabinets I’m building range $8,000-$10,000. Was contemplating start my own shop when I was approached with this deal. I’m ok with not making absolutely top dollar, considering he’s carrying all the overhead(which isn’t a whole lot.) and does all the ordering. But at the same rate. It’s got to make sense for me too. It’s either going to be a “by the day” figure or a “by the job “ figure. Either way, he’s getting more for his dollar than the other contractors in the same neighborhoods. I feel $2000.00 a set is a fair figure?

I assume you're working as a sub; self insured etc.
You competed those cabinets in 6-7 days, installed?
Wish you worked for me.
Tell him you think you've proved you can make his shop profitable, time to renegotiate
$35 per hr as an EMPLOYEE- he pays at least 75%( better if all) of your insurance costs, with you being on the books
$400 a day as a sub- it'll cost you $15 a day for overhead and you have to assume risk

If you are fine with the pay, why did you post in the first place? Just keep working, millions are not as lucky these days.
