Dynapro / Blum - Maximum drawer width

6/24/20
Jack

Hello,

Does anyone know what is the max drawer width requirement when using either Blum or Grass Dynapro conealed drawer slides?

I use 1/2" thick drawer sides, so my O.A. drawer width is 3/4" less than the opening. This may change if your sides are thicker.

I've used the Blum with 32" wide drawers or so. They say at those widths you should be using the stabilization kit that you can purchase separately. I never do and they function well.

I think anything wider than 24" they want the stabilization kit.

I've done a 48" drawer and the only reason it was problematic was it's height made it a very heavy drawer, more than the normal slides could handle. I switched over to the heavy duties and it was better but you could still tell the hardware was struggling by the amount of sag at full extension.

Here's a blurb from Blum

Product description
Blum lateral stabilizer for wide drawers using Tandem series B563 and B569 will prevent side to side racking. Synchronizing the left and right runners increases the lateral stability. Use for drawers for up to a maximum of 53" wide and for drawer depths of up to 27".

Thanks,

The drawer I need these for is 55inch wide and 15inch deep with 3/4 inch base (it's a tray). It will hold only around 20kgs of weight excluding the base

Greetings Jack,

The Salice "Shelf" drawer slide is designed for exactly what you describe. It installs much the same as a typical undermount but due to the design, additional slides can be added for wider pull-outs.

The Shelf slide is available in soft close or Push to open. There is also an optional "lock out" piece if that would be of interest. This might be used for a keyboard tray or retail showcases, for example. The Shelf slide is available in many lengths.

Here is a product bulletin for Shelf and a link for more information.

Shelf is available through any Salice distributor.

Best of luck,

Dennis

Hey Dennis,

The shelf slide sounds like something I'd like to use for a kitchen pullout countertop I need to create for a client in her kitchen.

The plan is to use 2 cm granite (~13/16") and it will be about 22" x 36" which will make it weigh about 72 lbs. I know if I throw enough of the shelf slides at it it can easily handle the weight.

What I'd like to know is how bouncy will it end up being? The plan for this for the most part is a dough making station. It'll be 30" off the floor for nice downward action when "pounding" dough out. Do you think this will be stable enough to use for this function?

Also interested in the lockout function so the shelf doesn't move while she's using it. Can't seem to find it on the web - found the slides though.

Hey Leo,

The weight would not be a problem but pounding on it to make bread would likely be an issue. It essentially has the same flex/stability properties as a quality undermount drawer slide. Would a good undermount be acceptable? I would have concerns.

I would be hesitant to recommend this even with an extra slide. They would likely pull the screws out of the wood with continued pounding.

I know there are actual counter/table extensions out there from Hafele and Richelieu. One of these may be a better choice.

Thanks for asking,

Dennis

I've looked at the options at Richelieu and didn't really see anything. Most were for a countertop that would pull up to be level with the existing counter, more of a countertop extension.

I have no issue putting 6 of these under the countertop and using machine screws that go through the "deck" of the cabinet with a nut on the opposite side to make sure there cannot be a pullout.

Make any difference?

Thanks

Is this a trick question? :)

I can send you 2 pair and build a mock-up. I think if you pound on it you will find the bounce unsettling

Let me know what length and I will send them right away.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
