Pattern Systems with Windows 7 32 Bit:

10/24/14
Jim Smith

Someone within my company has decided I needed to upgrade my computer. From A really good and still pretty new running Windows XP to a newer less powerful one running Windows 7 32 bit. Now I know XP is old and no longer supported, but we are still using Pattern Systems software, that hasn’t been updated for at least 6-7 years.

I have known others running newer versions of Pattern Systems on Windows Vista, but know no one using Windows 7. Is there anyone out there still running Pattern Systems and if so are you running Windows 7?

Please I am not looking for the up or down side of running such old and outdated software, been there done that, and would like nothing better to upgrading to something newer. However this is what I got, and this is what I’ll use.

Thank You Very Much

Hi Jim,

My first suggestion would to go back to WINXP. But if you can't then we should be able to get your old version of Pattern Systems operational on WIN7.

1. Are you able to install it onto your WIN7 computer? If so, what happens when you try to run it?
2. Are you getting OCX or DLL error messages? They may have to be registered manually. If this is the case, then you may want to use regsvr32.exe, located in your Windows32 directory.
3. Did you try to use the Compatibility Mode Wizard?
4. Did you install it with Administrative permissions? As an Administrator?
5. Did you de-activate ALL protection when you installed?
6. Decrease the amount of memory WIN7 is using by accessing your Control Panel - System-Advanced - Performance Settings, and adjust your computer FOR BEST PERFORMANCE.

I guess that's enough questions for now. Let me know the answers to the above. I don't have Pattern Systems, but there are similarities in installing programs that we can take advantage of.

Sometimes windows security has things on in the firewall that affect the ability to run even though the firewall is turned off. You can go to firewall, advanced and create custom rules.

you can also try Longbow reviver

Frank Thank You for your response.

As far as running Win XP I still have that up and running with no problem. The program is installed and as far as I know had no issues or error messages. That was done by someone else. The problem I am running into is when I tried to make some changes within an existing cutlist in Cut Planner. The program locks up and I need to Ctr/Alt/Del to shut down the program, then doesn’t restart, need to reboot the machine to get Cut Planner to start again then will lock up again when try and optimize the cutlist.

I will try and use Compatibility Mode, and when the person that installed the program comes in I will check to see if he installed as Administrator or de-activated the protection. As far as setting up Win7 it is already set up for “Best Performance” I will also check the firewall settings as Alan suggested, the firewall is turned off but don’t know about the other settings available.

I did check with a friend that was running a much newer version of Pattern Systems on Vista, but it took a lot of tweaking and several patches from Tech Support. Considering that 20/20 has dropped support of the Pattern Systems line I am guessing that my best option is to stay with XP.

Thank You

Jim Smith:

I feel your pain. I held on to XP as long as was possible, and when I had to switch, I first checked the possibility of transferring my Autocad R14 program to the new computer.

Yes, I still use R14, because I really like R14, and have added LISP files that make it easier to use, and since I only use it to do 2-D shop drawings, I saw no need to spend big money to change.

What worked for me, and this may work for you with the Pattern Systems software, with some tweaking, was the following:

1.) You need Windows 7 Professional so that you can run the XP mode emulator, and not any other version of Windows 7, even if it is 32-bit. It's more about XP mode, which is only possible with Windows 7 Pro.

2.) Copy the Pattern Systems program files from your old XP computer, just as they are, into the new computer, and copy them to C:/ Program Files/ , rather than try to load the program to the new computer by using the program install disk.

3. Right click the Pattern Systems execute file, go to Properties>Compatibility. Set the compatibility mode for Windows XP, and check the box that makes it run as administrator.

This worked for me for Autocad, and saved having to chase down third-party software and other patches and fixes for a program that is useful for me, but is no longer supported by the manufacturer.

Hope this helps.

Easiest fix is to purchase VM Workstation You can set up XP operating system or any other operating system while still running native Windows 7 or 8.

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.
  • Messages that accuse businesses or individuals of alleged negative actions or behavior are inappropriate since WOODWEB is unable to verify or substantiate the claims.
  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.
  • Responses that initiate or support inappropriate and off-topic discussion of general politics detract from the professional woodworking focus of WOODWEB, and will be removed.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
