I am very seriously considering purchasing V-Carve Pro. (I'm having my 12 year old son learn Sketchup and want him to get the experience of taking his design right through the cnc process). I'm doing the trial version now and am trying to figure out how to manipulate his sketchup file so that I can create the machine code but can't seem to figure it out. (Maybe it's a trial version issue?) All the tutorials look very straight forward but for some reason, I'm not getting from point A to point B. Am I supposed to convert from an skp file to a different one that V-Carve will handle? Thanks for your help!
We use Sketchup extensively to generate 2D vectors, 3D Mesh, and 3D Mesh textures that we then take to VCarve Pro for toolpathing. I can draw much faster in SU than I can in VCarve and not having Aspire Im better off keeping sharp on SU to generate 3D mesh that import cleanly into VCarve.
Sorry, Forgot the answer. Im not positive about the trial version but for simply importing vectors (2d) you will just go file/import/vectors and select your .skp file. It must be 2d. So all your geometry in SU must be flat (or will be made flat) You can keep components together on import with double underscore and some other options in the import. For 3D you want to have a closed mesh (no holes). You can use a plugin like solids inspector if needed. Then you will use file/import/component - 3d model and go through the assocated import dialogue. Feel free to message me if I can be of any help.
Thanks for the help! Changing to the 2015 file made a huge difference - I was able to import that just fine. It did eliminate some of the detail so I'm hoping I can do some editing in V-Carve to get that back in. I assume that is possible (?) I'll have to check into the plug-in as well. Mark, what did you mean by the double underscore? Also, he is using sketchup make (not the pro version) so I don't know if this makes a difference on how we approach this yet or not.
Not sure with regards to Make vs. Pro but you shouldnt really be losing any detail in 2d Vectors. May be something else at play.
Its most definitely possible to edit/re-work the vectors in VCarve but its definitely nice to get it in one shot and not have to re-do work you've already completed.

Basically the double underscore allows you to name a comonent with a double underscore to keep all the individual parts of that component together. When you have a component with several individual closed vectors within it, Vcarve will not respect that component by default and will import each of those vectors individually and they will be scattered around in your project. The double underscore keeps the geometry in-tact as it is in SU.This may be where you lost some detail but not sure.
