Edgebander static electricity problem3/12
We are having a lot of static electricity causing the shavings from our bottom trimmer wheel to stick the the parts coming off the edgebander. We have it grounded to the building but are thinking it needs to be a copper grounding rod into the ground. Can anyone help with this? Thanks. We're running an SCM olimpic K560
Dollar general and a spray can of static guard like you use in thr laundry room?
Connect a copper wire to machine, run it thru dust collector hose and attach to dust collector..
This is a problem with quite a few edgebanders and the shavings cause all kinds of quality issues down the line with copy wheels and overall machine maintenance. The dust collection hose will generate static electricity, make sure your ground it.
Mark B- you're a thinker for sure and thinking in the right direction but a can of static guard from Dollar General wouldn't be practical as it would need to be applied to each panel to be effective. It would also be hard to regulate the amount being sprayed and there is the possibility that a plain old static guard could stain veneers and other materials. The Ott Edgebanders manufactured in Austria that Nutek Machinery is now importing to North America have a mist nozzle to apply an anti-static spray that has been properly formulated for this purpose to the panels.
We machine a lot of plastic on occasion, PVC, HDPE, and do solid surface on a regular basis. A case of static guard is always in the shop. I hit the internals of the bander with it fairly regularly just as I do stationary tools and the CNC when we are running plastic. Even with good grounding there is enough there to catch the super fines and we have an older bander where the DC pickup is less than phenomenal. It at least makes the bulk of it drop to the floor/bottom of the machine. CNC a light dusting of it around the shoe and while the DC is running makes a world of difference with the stickies.
Dont really think of the veneer issue too much because I'd just be careful at that point but when I think of static I think of plain jane plastic/PVC banding and laminate/melamine and there aint nothing in static guard that you can spray on your expensive clothes thats going to bother my PVC banding.
When Ive needed to its just a quick mist in the machine, hit the hot spots, and it all drops away. It last a good while, not like it has to be applied hourly. Once a day here and there if needed, most of the time never.
Thanks for the responses. I've run an edgebander for years and never heard of using static guard. I'll definitely give it a try. We'll also ground to the dust collector.
I dont think using anti-static spray of any kind is commonplace by any means especially around modest production environments. Its just something I started using to try to keep the shop clean mainly when cutting PVC sheet material. I dont care what you have for grounding the stuff will be stuck all over your machines, your clothes, your safety glasses, inside DC flex, etc.. Started getting in the habit of keeping it around and it comes in handy. By far not an ultimate solution but it does help a lot for me.
I also have had a static electricity problem in our house, but the situation was so bad that we had to turn to an electrician team. Before doing that, I suggest trying everything you can, such as using fabric softener and dryer sheets will help reduce the presence of static and pull clothes out of the dryer while they are still damp and hanging them to dry. You could also try installing a humidifier, which is the most effective way to minimize static electricity. If none of these work, you should turn to a team of electricians.
