pigmented waterbourne

I've got an upcoming pigment job to do and have used both Target and MLC water based finishes in the past. I've recently started spraying Sayerlack for some of my clears and have been impressed. My rep says that they also can do it in pigmented, just wondering if anyone else here has used it yet, and if not what do you like best for pigmented water base. I've got a little time to experiment .

A quick side note. If you haven't used the new MLC Agualente Plus yet, do not expect it to act as before. So far I have found that the final finish has been great, but it's drying time has nearly doubled.
Took a while to adjust my spraying Technics for it.

For the past 6 months I've been using SW's Kem-Aqua Plus and I am very satisfied; dries fast, comes out smooth., I've stacked and packed without issue after 24 hours dry time, clear coat it and it can pass for CV in feel if not durability, not to say itsn't durable...it is. the one problem I've had with it is sometimes out of the blue for a reason that is a mystery to me it won't flow out and I get little pin-holes in the finish. a couple of other pluses are; I pay $32.00 a gallon and it's readily availible.
before using the kem-aqua plus I used Target for a few years and l prefer the kem-aqua plus.

I have used Aqualente and Lots of GF Poly in the past and both are excellent. I absolutely love GF products and they pretty much have the most complete WB line that I can reasonably access but they changed distribution channels so I have been looking around for something more local.

I had a meeting with my local SW rep and he is lining up some KemAqua samples in both clear and pigmented for me to try.

I talked to him about sayerlack and apparently that is only sold through industrial locations so it would need to come from a SW industrial store which is 150 miles away.

So does anyone know the differences in performance and cost between KemAqua and Sayerlack?

I second the General Finishes poly, hands down the winner by far in my book. I'm a MLC user of solvent based finishes, but loathe their water based stuff.

Tim, what are you using as a primer under the GF Poly? I have found their undercoat is too expensive and isnt a stain blocker.

Hi John
I have been spraying pigmented waterbornes for years and have tried a lot of different manufacturers. Switched over to Sayerlack about a year ago and have been extremely pleased with the results. We thin it about 3-5% and it lays out great and is an extremely durable finish. One of the best things I like about it is the ability to touch up. Good luck

Hey Tim Decker, I tried to get Sayerlac from my local SW store for 4 months to no avail. It went from one excuse to another to finally they just couldn't/wouldn't get it for me because of where I am (Southern Oregon). Now I'm happy with the Kem-Aqua but if there's something better I can offer my customers I want in on it. Which brings me to my questions; Where you located?, Who are are you getting this magic stuff from? and lastly, How's the availability?

I use the Zinnser B-I-N Shellac-Based White Interior/Spot Exterior Primer and Sealer ,sprays great without the grain raising one gets with water based primers. Runs around $45 at most Lowes type stores.

In reference to the stain blocking primer from General Finishes, I respray lots of kitchens that start out as oak but customers want to be white and I have found two methods. The first is to shoot an initial cost of clear poly and let it dry, then shoot a coat of primer over that and let dry overnight.

I'd there are tannins that come through the original finish this is very important. If you just use the primer you can sometimes get by by eliminating the clear coat and waiting overnight as well but I find you get a better bond to the original finish with the clear coat than with any primer but if you don't let it sit overnight you will get bleed through no matter how many coats you throw at it.

Once the tannins are locked in you can shoot a coat of pigmented over it and if you still get bleed through, let the pigmented sit overnight and shoot a final coat over it.

We are in New Hampshire, so not much help to you. Although Sayerlack is owned by SW, for some reason they do not offer here even through their industrial coatings division. In this part of the country we get it from Bates Industrial coatings in Littleton Mass. We use the Sayerlack AT 9930 that is a acrylic urethane blend not a lacquer. Another really good finish is a product called Lorchem Hydro Edge. They are a Canadian company so not sure about availability in other parts of the country.

Dave,
Where do you purchase this from? It's a 2 part water base system? I'm interested in any more info you can give me, how it differs from others, etc.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
