Older Kremlin Sprayer ID

I've recently taken on some work doing retail installations and built-ins. I have a 3-stage fuji hvlp unit that I'm happy enough with but a friend of a friend found an older Kremlin setup and asked if I was interested. I know very little about the unit, beyond that it was used for solvent finishes and the pump is not dry. I'm using WB exclusively and don't really want to move to solvents.

Can anyone ID this setup based on the photos? There is a fair amount of overspray on the unit and my buddy cannot find a nameplate. The price is right, but it's quite a drive to pick it up.

That looks to be mvx model spray gun it is a large pump it can run 3 or 4 guns the kremlin is a very finicky spray rig it take 1/4 gallon to prime it a tip now cost 145 dollars I hate to say it but, going from a Fuji hvlp to a kremlin is like going from a vw to a rolls Royce kremlin is the best spray system many high end shop use the they are very costly I been using them for over 20 years ,but I started with a new one it takes a while to learn how to use them

Many thanks for the thoughts Fred.

I realize this would be quite a step up from my current 4-stage HVLP setup. The biggest outstanding questions I have are:

1) Age... can these older pumps still be serviced/rebuilt? It looks like parts/tips for the MVX guns are not an issue.
2) Can I use this setup (pump + gun) for water-based finishes? I am trying to move to a 100% water based setup. Currently, ML Campbell WB products.
3) My local ML Campbell rep is great and has offered to help me get retooled (even with a used setup).

The two things you will notice is that 1 the transfer efficiently is85 %of your coating is sprayed on the cabinets when I bought the first kremlin it paid for its self in 6 months used less than 1/2 amount of clear coat two cost of parts and equipment is very high The current set up I have is a eos kremlin it current cost is $5600 with exite gun 25 ft hose.the Fuji hvlp will waste about 50%of the product I don’t know if you realize it but I would guess you will spend at least 1200 to 1500 for seals hoses tips for the old kremlin they have stop making some parts for the mvx gun good luck everyone what you do

As for the amount to just prime the Kremlin... You can change things up and make it so the prime isn't as big. I got rid of the 5/8" pickup tube in place for an 11mm pickup. Use a smaller ID hose to the gun. I can mix up 15oz for my Kremlin MVX and spray a few small things. Before I swapped things around it was about 20oz to fill the hoses.

As for that dusty creature you have pictured. I can't ID it.

Thanks Leo. That's very useful to know. I fully expect the older unit to need a little work given the photos. However, I'm used to commodity, 'VW' pricing for parts. Thankfully, I';m usually able to service things myself.

it is either a 10-25 pump or a 20-25 pump, cannot see if their is a large outlet filter. the gun is a mvx gun. no question about it. you can find parts on ebay. the mvx gun accepts the new vx24 aircap that comes on the new xcite gun. ditch the square box, it is an electrostatic power supply i believe and ep9 it is also obsolete just dump it it has no value good luck herb j

also easy to get parts for either. first off look at youtube and see if their is a video for a pump stall test. also you can get a smaller pick up hose and tube for it. i believe not sure the entire for the lower ball check assy is 1/2 npt . it should have a double male nipple. the one end with is not a standard us thread goes onto the siphon hose, the other end of the nipple i believe is npt and from their you can get a 1/2 x 3/8 s steel nipple then any hose mfg can connect to a 3/8 npt/nps male. ...see if you can get a picture of the pump and see if the outlet of the pump has a large filter and drain valve ball valve....if your only spray with one gun, you really don't need it as their is a filter screen in the mvx inlet. i would flush the pump with some mek and then acetone which is misible with water, ie mixes with water then flush with water before you prime the pump with campbell h20. your campbell rep can also give you some solid advice on that

i thought about it is definately a 20-1 pump a 20-25 model....most wb will spray just fine at about 600- 1100 psi, or 30 psi on the right regulator or to a high of 50psi on the right regulator. you will have to get use to less overspray and a faster film build. probably 06-094 or a 09-114. let me know if you need any further info, happy memorial day good luck herb j

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
